Fakey's 2019 Games of the Year

Note: As always, I include my favorite games I played this year, even if they were released before 2019.

As predicted, I had some more time to play games in 2019 than in the last several years, since my kids were born (they are 5 and 6 now...).

I still mostly played older games, rather than brand new games, but I had a ton of fun with several games, in particular, and I'm going into 2020 with a lot of energy to keep going through my backlog, including games on my brand new Nintendo Switch. :D

Another year down, I'm getting old, but as long as Vinny and Jeff are still at GB, I won't feel too old. :P

Honorable Mentions

Burly Men at Sea

I want to call out Burly Men at Sea, simply because it is a short game that touched my heart just a little. There are some branching paths which you'll want to replay a bit to see, and the end is just a nice little heart-warmer. :)

Florence

Florence has been talked about on Bombcasts, and while it didn't hit me as much as it may have hit others, I still think it is worth a play for anyone that has been in a relationship that hasn't worked out...

Modern Warfare 3

I'm only calling this game out, because I played Modern Warfare (2007) for the first time last year and then played 2 and 3 this year, and while I know they don't stand up as much as they did when they came out, they were still entertaining, and I'm glad I played through them. I plan on playing through the Black Ops games this year (or at least the first couple).

Quarantine Circular

Quarantine Circular is a better game, story, and experience than Subsurface Circular, in my opinion. I think both are worth playing, but I can recommend Quarantine to any fan of this storytelling medium.

Zeno Clash II

Zeno Clash 1 and 2 are old games. I played the first game many years ago and bought the second game in 2013, 6 months after it came out...only to play it 6 years later! To be perfectly honest, the gameplay of both games is really hard to deal with in 2019, and the visuals are super rough (they were even when they came out). However, the atmosphere and insane characters are still interesting for games that only take 4-6 hours to complete. So, I don't regret finally knocking this one off my backlog. :P

Most Disappointing

Slain!

I love the visuals and the music of Slain so much, as a fan of metal and Metalocalypse. However, as a gamer that does not enjoy being frustrated and banging my head against things (or the "git gud" mentality), I found Slain very unenjoyable. I used cheat codes (the kind of thing Jeff has talked about on Bombcasts) for the first time ever to get through the game. I really want to buy Valfaris, the second game from the same developer, but I'm honestly worried I'll feel the same about it as Slain. :(

Wolfenstein: Youngblood

I played through all of Youngblood with a friend, and that was fun. I don't regret my time with it, except for the last boss, which was not fun at all... Ultimately, though, I really wanted the game to be better, and I was disappointed that I didn't really enjoy the game, at least (I love the two new Wolfenstein games before this one).

New Games that I didn't get to (but could have been contenders)

I finally bought a Nintendo Switch! But, I'm still way behind (i.e. Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Luigi's Mansion 3, etc.)

Also, I never bought a Playstation or Xbox console this generation, which honestly amazes me, but I am definitely in on buying a Playstation 5 at launch next year...as long as it isn't above $500...

Outer Wilds

I'm going to play through Outer Wilds as soon as I get through Torment: Tides of Numenara, which I'm finally at the end of (after putting it down for months at a time at least three separate times). I bought Outer Wilds last fall but just never got to it, and with all the GOTY talk, I know I have to get through it ASAP.

The Outer Worlds

I have Game Pass for Windows, so I have to play through The Outer Worlds before it leaves that. :D

And my Games of the Year!!:

List items

  • I wasn't really very interested in Overwatch when it was announced and first came out, because I've tried so many multiplayer games and fell off every single one. However, Overwatch grabbed me like no other multiplayer game EVER has. A couple guys at work play it, and they've introduced me to a whole new friend group that plays it. I am consistently improving, and it has become a main-stay of my gaming life!

  • I finally got to play RDR2 when it came out on PC in 2019. I jumped right on it, as it was one of the most anticipated games for me. I will admit that I had to take a couple breaks from it, as there were parts that dragged a bit for me, and i think it could have been shorter and tighter. However, it was an epic story and an amazing experience to play through such a high-budget, high-quality interactive story with a lot of strong and touching moments.

  • I don't spend too much time reading impressions from other gamers, but as a fan of the Metro series, I thought Exodus was an amazing game, my favorite in the series. I personally liked not being in the tunnels all the time and having more freedom and less, constant tense moments. I loved the stealth and thought the story and atmosphere was very engaging.

  • I finally broke down and played RDR on my PS3 after RDR2 was announced for PC, and it became obvious that RDR wasn't going to be announced for PC. Yes, I was stupid to wait so long, but I just kept thinking that they would finally put RDR out on PC. However, I did like the game, and the graphics weren't as bad in 2019 as I thought they may be. I liked the tighter story and experience, compared to most GTA games (and especially compared to RDR2).

  • Return of the Obra Dinn is one of those games that I finally played and wished I'd played right when it came out. I thoroughly enjoyed the gameplay loop of investigation, looking for clues, matching a name to a NPC, and then doing it over and over. I got pretty addicted to it, and I played through the whole game in just a few days.

  • I'm not a "rogue-like" person, but Void Bastards is one of the variations that really grabbed me. I found it amusing, addicting, and just fun. The ending was very disappointing, but getting to the ending was a great experience.

  • I love all the SteamWorld games, and I never got around to Heist, even though I bought it for my Vita and PC. However, I've almost completed it on my new Switch, and it has been a pleasure to play...except when I try to get all the stars and get frustrated with one of my crew dying at the last moment :P

  • Yes, A Way Out is corny and cheesy, but it is a GREAT experience to play through with a friend, which is what I did last year. We both had a lot of fun and really enjoyed the cinematic gameplay.

  • I never played through Luigi's Mansion before, but I bought it for 3DS, because I wanted to play through it and Dark Moon before going to Luigi's Mansion 3, which I plan to play this year (2020). I really had a lot of fun with Luigi's Mansion, and it kept me engaged during the whole game. The controls are rubbish, but I bought the Circle Pad Pro to help with the controls, and that worked well enough. However, I know Dark Moon doesn't utilized the Circle Pad....

  • I played through Severed on the Vita, and while I found some of the enemies rather frustrating, I really enjoyed this game even more than I expected, and it was a perfect experience on the Vita with swiping the screen (and the screen not being too large, which I feel might frustrate me on the Switch, personally).
