mgs3 is still the best in the series i think. everything about it was pretty damn close to perfect. mgs2 is also pretty damn good, but things like the big shell being a way less cool environment, inferior controls and mechanics, playing as raiden, the terrible swordfighting mechanic, and less funny codec calls than mgs3 which is loaded with them hold it back.
mgs2 is definitely the most challenging of the modern games, though (metal gear 2, which is on the mgs3 disc, is so insanely hard i ragequit three screens in)
Just go right to the fifth one. you can watch recaps of the others. Then go back and play 2, since that's the next best one. then 4. then if they ever bring kenzan out here you can play that.
and no, none of them have english voice acting except the first one, where it's bad in a funny way, but the japanese voice acting is seriously top tier. koichi yamadera (spike spiegel, the mostly human guy from ghost in the shell, and other stuff) voices one of the main characters, for one thing.
edit:
oh i read what you said more carefully @inspectorfowler. yakuza zero is pretty much confirmed to be coming our way soon iirc (2017?), and that will be on ps4, and features 1980s kiryu and majima :]
@kasaioni: I actually really liked Noel, and would happily take him over everyone other than Sazh.
hell, same. well, Sazh and Lightning. and he'd be about tied with Snow, because Snow is voiced by Troy Baker :3, but yeah. I prefer Serah to Noel, though. she's a really good character.
Also like the guy above the above says, the Caius voice acting is top tier. There aren't any of the weak characters that you have to put up with in most FF games in this one.
fun fact in case if you didn't know, Serah's voice actress also did Rise from persona 4 and the TRUE VOICE of the main character in saints row 3 and 4. oh and kaine in Nier. and lots of others.
