My Future in Gaming

This past E3 has been by far the most boring for me.  Sure they showed off some great games, but the amount and excitement behind it compared to previous years seem lackluster.  Sony was all about the Move (which seems like a fancier Wii Remote) and the only game they showed off that I liked was Sorcery.  Microsoft was all about the Kinect, which still seems sorta lame with the exception of Child of Eden and Dance Central.  Nintendo was Nintendo.  I'm interested in the 3DS, but they couldn't really show it off.  The new Legend of Zelda, well, all I can say is that I haven't really enjoyed a Zelda game since Wind Waker.  I know I'm gonna get a lot of WTF comments, but Twilight Princess started off so slow that I couldn't get through the town.  I am really looking forward to Metroid: Other M though.  Maybe it's because I'm poor or just growing out of games that now I'm a dad or maybe it was a crappy E3 compared to previous years.  So how much will I game for the rest of the year?  Probably not as much.

As a note, I've attended 3 E3's.  2003-2005.

On another note, I feel asleep at the 2003 E3 in the IGDA couch on the show floor in the middle of the day.  The midnight showing of The Matrix Reloaded was the night before and I didn't get to sleep until 3am and woke up at 6 or 7am to make it the convention center.

Facebook Games are Fun and Then....

Previously I had blogged how I had been playing Facebook games for numerous reasons.  They start off really interesting and fun.  Best of all they are free.  I really got into them and started to branch off and try other Facebook games.  Now I'm playing 4-5 games on a regular basis since each games you play for a couple of minutes and then you have to wait for your energy or whatever to refill.  This works well short breaks as I'm applying to jobs and taking care of my daughter.  Then I got past the beginner phase and realized that I just wasted a little bit of time playing these games.  Not because they got boring, but because all of them are social games and require your friends to play with you or at least join your group, be your neighbor, or guild.  I have a little over 100 friends of Facebook, but only 10% of them play Facebook games.  And those 10 people only play FrontierVille.

So how do you get more people to join your group in the game if your FB friends won't play?  You have to send strangers friend requests.  However, you just can't befriend them in the game, you have to friend them in all of FB.  If you're like me, then you'll only friend people you know in real life or have a report going on for some time with somebody you don't know in person.  So I don't send friend request to strangers just to build my army.  I'll just stop playing FB games.

Being Unemployed has Changed My Gaming Habits

After being unemployed for a bit over a month now has really changed how much and what games I play.  You would think that I would be playing more games now that I have all this free time.  However, that is not the case.  I've playing less games and the games I do play are on Facebook and my iPhone.  This is due to many factors.

1. Not working at Gamestop lets me enjoy more casual games and less retail games since when I did work at GS I had to know about the games we sold.
2. Less income means less money to buy retail games so I play free or inexpensive games.  Facebook games are free and iPhone games are cheap.
3. My daughter can crawl and start to stand up and take steps now.  Before, she would just lay next to me or just sit in my lap as I played my PS3 and 360, but since she can get around and into stuff, I constantly have to watch her.  So now I play with her instead.  And try to teach her stuff too.

Hopefully I'll get back to my retail games and finish up Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2, etc...  In the meantime, I'll be playing Words with Friends, Risk Factions, Castle Age, and FrontierVille.

4. I can't find my Dualshock 3 controller after I moved.
