Best of 2009

2009 is almost over but not before I make this list of games I played and loved!

List items

  • The campaign was a fun roller coaster ride that took it into the absurd and over the top that mirror a Michael Bay, Jerry Bruckheimer film. Multiplayer is the same beast with layers upon layers of customization that can take months to tinker with.

  • I liked the first Assassin's Creed even with it's annoying repetitive missions types. With the second installment Ubisoft tightened up those graphics and gameplay and finally delivers what should've been in 2007.

  • Truly this is the age of rewinds. Turn 10 returns after a two years of development and adds features that help not hinder the player's progress. Adding "season play" guides you through the game without slogging through menu after menu, giving rewind adds a choice of fixing that lap you messed up on.

  • Destruction is the name of this game. Free roaming games really aren't new but Red Faction takes the formula and adds one simple variant to the mix. Being able to fully obliterate buildings adds a new level of depth and strategy to rather simple missions. Taking out a whole army can be as simple as running them over with a big rig. Running over things in a dump truck never gets old.

  • "Castroid" as I like to call it is one of the few Xbox Live titles I picked up in 2009. Mirroring the Metroid formula was done for a reason, power up and getting new weapons gets addicting. Exploring the environment for health and missiles feels rewarding and encourages you to search every nook and cranny. It's a bargain at 1200 points.

  • This little game seemed like a rip off to me. Three maps? Three classes of soldiers? WW2 again? But firing it up and playing through is such a great time. By simplifying the class system and giving you infinite ammo it gives it an "arcadey" feel. No need to customize or level up to gain that ultimate weapon, just capture that flag!

  • Utliizing an Island was key for this game. No need for Batman to save the whole city of Gotham. Batman can still use his trademark gadgetry all over Arkham. I love how these items give you plenty of choice in how to approach enemies. Add to that a great narrative and voice acting and Game of the Year awards will come.
