Why is FLCL so great?

Now, I've not watched a lot of anime, but I'd say that FLCL is probably the worst series that I've ever seen.

A robot coming out of Naota's huge, oddly shaped bump totally means he's having an erection... or something.
A robot coming out of Naota's huge, oddly shaped bump totally means he's having an erection... or something.
The animation and music may be alright, but the English voice acting is terrible (I'm not one to believe that there's a "proper" way of watching anime), excluding a few characters.  The show was barely funny and it was mostly composed of utter nonsense.  I'm all for "coherent absurdity", but all I was seeing was stupidity after stupidity.  Sure, apparently it's full of symbolism about sexuality, a boy's coming of age (2 themes that I very much dislike) and all that junk, but I'm not going to dig hard to find it and derive some sense through all of that garbage.

Is this series so great because it's open to many interpretations?  Is the problem here that "I just don't get it"?  In moments where the craziness was a bit toned down, I could see some aspects of the story that were genuinely interesting, but then it quickly degenerated once more.  It was just lacking any semblance of a comprehensive story, one of the most important parts of an anime, for me.

Nah, that's not what I mean at all.  Obviously, different people have different tastes.  I just want to really see some positive opinions of others regarding the series because I'm really confused as to why this is a highly regarded anime series right now.

You don't get it would be the shorthand answer. The long answer would be you giving examples of what you like (let me guess, a bunch of self serious stuff with religious allegory) and then me going "you don't get it".
Bottom line is most people like the show and its highly rated, so really the burden of evidence is on you, not people who like it.

@ryanwho: But that's what I want to know.  What is it that I don't get?  Is it just good in many people's eyes because it's so absurd and nuts?  If that's the case, then fine.  I'm not one for super serious stories, I just like it when it makes at least a bit of sense.

And I know I'm in the minority.  Of course I'm in the minority!  I've already stated why I don't like the series in the blog entry, but I do know the series is highly regarded by the vast majority of people.

I really don't get what you mean.  I posted my opinions in my OP.  That's it.  I even posted some questions in the final paragraph as to what I'm missing to make it seem good to me.  I have no idea why it would seem like all I'm saying is "FLCL sucks and everyone who likes it is wrong!!!"

@FluxWaveZ: I like FLCL a lot. I am not sure where the disconnect between our opinions resides exactly, but I did enjoy the wacky animations and I did find it funny. Also, I feel that the term you used in your original post, "coherent absurdity" (which you say you are all for), describes the series perfectly. I definitely understand how the plot can be hard to follow, and I almost always warn people that they will not be able to follow it on their first watch-through. If you want to like it, give it another try. Due to it's fast action and over-the-top animation, you will see things you never noticed every time you watch it.

Of course, shrugging your shoulders and moving on is another option. It's really up to you whether you feel like giving it another shot.

i never "got it" either...may have something to do with the hype over it before i ever watched it, and this was years ago. People set me up to think it's the greatest thing, i watch it, it's kind of "whatever" so then i'm forced to wonder the same, "what's the deal". i don't think it's the worst series i've ever seen, but i still don't understand the levels of praise it gets.

One is framed in pejoratives, as if you're looking for a certain answer, and the other is an honest query. The way you asked the question opened the door to people going mostly "yeah I don't get that shit either, I guess its just trendy people fitting in" and other useless responses like that.
Anyhow FLCL isn't as random as it seems, having watched it more than a few times. Its a show with so many things going on that you have to watch through more than once to pick up on everything. I can understand it seeming like random chaos signifying nothing on the first view. But really it has about as much coherence as a story where a kid writes down a name and the person dies. It is partly satire in that way, how people who watch anime are used to just excepting ridiculous shit as "well that's how the world works here". And they deliberately push those buttons to an extreme degree. Where people go "the whole premise is ridiculous". Yes it is. So is the premise of what you watched yesterday.

FLCL is pretty divisive, it's one of those ones that either clicks or doesn't. It's only great if it fits your taste, otherwise it's terrible.

The first time I watched it I was frustrated because I had no idea what was going on, but I still enjoyed the animation and crazyness and music.

The second time, I followed it better and was able to actually soak in the different aspects of it, and relax and enjoy everything it had to offer. Personally, I find it so enjoyable because of how surreal it is; it just really did something for me that made me fall in love with it.

The principle behind FLCL is Cogito Ergo Sum which means "I Think, Therefore I Am".  It's all about how we perceive reality, how our perceptions shape what we perceive and how we actually find oursleves in relation to the universes once we understand the power of thought.  It is a show which takes allusion and makes it real.  It's full of strong imagery, such as the bump on the main character's head from which things are brought into the world, which is an allegory for 'pregnant thought', just as a bump on woman's belly is the child growing in the womb before she comes to term and it's born.

Ooooh...  So that's what it actually means.  See, those are the kinds of things that I don't think I'm smart enough to notice (with little effort) without reading someone else's interpretation.  It passes right over my head.

My opinion:  The animation, music, fight scenes, and pretty much all the other technical aspects were extremely well done.  The story is absurd and difficult to follow, and at a certain point I decided that I didn't really need to understand it all that well and just enjoyed the stream of bizarre things happening on the screen.  It has a pretty good juxtaposition of crazy-as-hell action and nonsensical plot twists with a relatively normal kid with a normal life and normal problems, which gave it a weird, fun pace.  It's a nice break from the overly serious shows I'd seen up to that point, like War in the Pocket (which is awesome).
Personal Feelings:  It's been quite some time since I watched it, and I was pretty young when I first saw it, so forgive me for saying that it struck an emotional chord with me.  Naota was something I could relate to, what with his odd mixture of respect and jealousy/hatred of his older brother and whatever he felt for Mamimi.  He was confused as hell, and I watched it at a time in my life when I was confused as hell, so it's always stuck with me.

Yeah, I think that's what the major problem was for me: I couldn't do that.  I tried real hard, throughout the whole thing, to see what the story was trying to convey and just being frustrated when it made absolutely no sense to me at the end of the episode.  Just enjoying for what it is is probably what I'll have to learn to do as I watch it a second time.

"But the English voice acting was terrible..."

I agree the English voice acting is absolutely horrid. Love all the voice acting in Japanese though, spot on.

When it comes to overall story FLCL is a bit lacking. But it was a stylistic experiment for Gainax that started the whole Loony Toons meets Anime vibe that lead to stuff like Gurren Lagann, Dead Leaves and what not. It was also chock full of anime parodies and references for the hell of it. This show isn't meant to be taken seriously at all, but just some small crazy ass short project for fun (All the technobabble in the show is dumb as hell, and for reason).

And besides, it's not serious about the "coming of age" thing, I felt like it was just typical kids (Naota and Ninamori) that think they are smarter than everyone when in fact they are just that, kids. Naota just misses his brother who he looked up to, and Ninamori just wants to have her family back to normal.

The only person that "grew up" so to speak is Mamimi... She's the only really troubled individual in the show, and irresponsibly dumps all her teenage problems onto Naota (and Ta-kun and the 'dog') which confuses the hell out of him.

The plot of this show is simple, and pretty ordinary...
(then of course Haruko makes it into a fucking insane blizzard of epic proportions).

I know you watched it but seeing as you're trying too hard to get something out of it I'll do a short review of the episodes.

WARNING! SPOILERS FOR AN OLD ASS CARTOON  WARNING!

First episode, Naota is confused about Mamimi throwing her teenage troubles at him.
(Haruko hits Naota with a Vespa and Guitar to summon a robot out of his head.)

Second episode, Naota finds out Mamimi is a arsonist and get's more confused about his relationship with her.
(Haruko beats up a bigger robot that comes out of Naota's head.)

Third episode, Ninamori cheats to get the lead role in the school play to gain attention from her parents, who are busy with a scandal.
(Haruko fights a robot that came out of Ninamori's head due to collision with Naota's head.)

Fourth episode, Naota deals with his problems regarding his big brother going off to the US.
(Haruko accidentally kills Naota's dad, replaces him with a robot, messes with Naota's mind pulls out a guitar from his head and makes him use it to hit a falling satellite.)

Fifth episode, Naota finds out that Mamimi is just using him as a substitute for his brother. Tries to assert himself like his brother but fails horribly.
(Haruko parodies the Daicon series with bunny suit and all, fights a giant hand that has guns on it's fingers which are also hands.)

Sixth episode, Naota is a mess but gets over it. Life returns to normal with the departure of Haruko, Mamimi finds a purpose in life, and the kids go to middle school.
(Before she leaves Haruko does her thing, which is always a disaster, then tells Naota that he's still a kid, the only responsible adult thing she ever does for him.)

I just try to look at it like this: The main character of the series doesn't even have a good idea of what's going on 90% of the time.  Being confused by everything is probably how you're supposed to watch the show, and if they really expect me to rewatch it ten times and scour over details to figure out what's happening, they can shove it.  It's made watching anime far more enjoyable.

And thanks for the summaries.  It makes it slightly clearer as to what was going on, but I still can make little to no links between the parts you put in parentheses to the parts that are not.  I suppose I shouldn't be looking to make many links, either.

I always thought Naota's situation was like a coming of age story, he was growing up, dealing with his brother leaving and his girlfriend coming onto him and using him as a replacement. When he finds out he tries to be different, tries to protect her and it blows up in his face.

Wonder why everyone seems to be looking over the sexual aspect here, cause there was a lot, like Haruko teasing Mr. Big brows about the 'size' of what he could bring to the world through his own cranial 'portal' Or Naota's fight with his father over wanting to have Haruko for himself and not his dirty dirty father XD

He's a kid growing up, and the way it all just ends might be a testament to the chaos that comes around when you hit puberty.

I liked the show, I liked the little south park moment it had and I really liked the voice acting (guess i'm in the minority here) the crazy ness and the animation keep you coming back. I watched this show at least 10 times, never got tired of it. It's short and fun. You should really try Dead Leaves, now that one was a mind fuck...

I went and looked at the Wikipedia article to get Amarao's name right (which could be wrong, I guess) and it mentions that Haruko is an "investigator for the Galactic Space Patrol Brotherhood/Stellar Fraternity". I don't remember them making that very clear in the show, but it's certainly possible.

@Zithe:  It's never confirmed, pretty much like everything else about Haruko. The only real producer-confirmed fact is that she was in fact, not in love with Atomsk but simply after the power he possessed. So it's unclear if she was a renegade cop or a rival space pirate.

Anyway, the only thing this thread's been good for is making me start my Nth rewatch of FLCL.

It's an absurd series rife with goofy humor, well-choreographed action, and the occasional in-joke.  (ex:  Haruko's bunnygirl outfit is a reference to an old Gainax animated short).  There's a plot there, but things are presented in such a rapid-fire, over-the-top manner that it can easily become lost in the beautiful insanity.  I consider that more or less a reason to watch it multiple times, just to catch everything.

Also, if the English dub is terrible, then switch it to Japanese and read the subtitles to see how it compares.

Yeah, I definitely plan on doing that when I watch it again.  Hamarao's English VA was great, though.

It was pretty abstract, but short enough to enjoy it. An interesting audio-visual experience, for me at least. I liked it.

I don't understand it ether. I have tried watching it several times and can't get through the first episode because it's so uninteresting.
