My Top 10 of 2022

This sure has been a year that I don't need repeating. A ton of operations, roughly a month of hospital stay in total, followed by resting and healing from it that goes on to this day. For something that never really is/was that threatening.

While I missed out on gaming a bit in the first half of the year, I overall should have had a lot more time during recovery to look at a ton of games. Sadly that wasn't really the case, as I mostly focused on a handful of familiar games or demos from the Steam Next Fest.

That is why this year's Top 10 is a bit of a disappointment to me. Had I played one or two great games more, some of these games on this list might only be in my "Honorable Mentions" corner or maybe never be that high.
But oh well. That just means that more great games are waiting for me in 2023.

Before we start:

  • This list includes games I have played this year. I don't care about their actual release date or whether or not they are still in early access.
  • According to my google doc I have played 213 games (which are 13 more than last year) and completed 67 of them (9 more than in 2021)
  • GiantBomb's "Ordered List" starts with the Nr.1 at the top. So scroll down to start at the right position, the bottom.
  • My Top 10 also exist in video form. Feel free to check it out if you can speak german. It also includes the game that disappointed me this year. Link

  • As ugly this game looks / looked during previews and as bad it performs, the main idea of Pokemon; catching, training, fighting, is still super satisfiying and fun.

The idea of open world was improved upon; being able to go into many different directions, having three actually decent to really good storylines going alongside it, as well as having fun rivals or supporting characters, easily turned this into one of the best Pokemon games ever. Which is impressive, as a lot of people have/had argued the same for Legends: Arceus at the beginning of the year.

I quickly broke through 200 hours played while having only finished the story (no postgame yet). I have caught all 400 Pokes and already two boxes full of shinies, yet I can tell you: I don't feel like stopping.

I am really looking forward to playing more, especially if/when the DLC is coming out.

  • Amazing. Truly a great game with a fascinating story. It was such a wild ride trying to figure out whats going on and how its all connected, only for the next revelation to expand, confuse and change it all.

Only downside is the Tower Defense sections. On normal its a breeze, but you don't want to turn the difficulty up because the reward for making it harder doesn't exist; the gameplay had little to no influence on the story. I don't think you would miss much if you had removed this part of the game

  • The Pokemon Company actually dared to try something different. Going into the past, just as the first pokeballs were invented, semi open world with a different battle and catch system.

It was fun playing through, catching all the mons, but to me its a game just like Death Stranding. Great because it tries something different. I don't need every game to be like them. Give me more Legends games in the future, sure. But the main games doesn't need to become like Arceus.

  • RimWorld is a great mix of The Sims; taking care of your people, decorating their homes, and commiting war crimes. This game technically falls into the same category as FIFA; Played alongside a podcast etc. Only that it happens more in spurts.

This time I picked it back up again because of the DLCs. While there are things to complain about with each of the three expansions, modding support helps fixing those problems. I recently reached 700 hours played and can guarantee that many more will follow. Even if something like Dwarf Fortress needs to be checked out soon as well.

  • (and FIFA 23). Here is the bad guy. The game that ate over 700 hours which I could have used to check out other games. But it was the ideal game for recovery.

Normally these "Podcast" games are great to play alongside listening/watching something or if you have to bridge time. In other situations I would have played something like Hearthstone Battlegrounds, but as I was recovering from surgeries, I didn't want to play a game I couldn't pause. FIFA's career modes can be paused whenever.

I had a lot of fun playing FIFA. I don't truly regret playing the game, but these endless games are like fastfood. I don't want to know how many more games I could have played, their stories experienced, when I just could have put down the beautiful game.

  • After an epic detour we were finally allowed to witness the end of the Hitman trilogy.

The story was entertaining, the locations continued to go to the places I wanted it to (The rich and pompous-looking ones) and the gameplay stayed where it should be.

I had fun playing H3, but with the steam version being a year behind and IO Interactive's strict Always Online and FOMO strategy, there was little to no desire to check out the Elusive Targets or other "post game" content. Also the 7 Deadily Sins DLC was mostly, and in many ways, disappointing.

  • The first game, Kingdom Battle, was a blast. Mario + XCom sounded like such a weird idea when first announced, but it was surprising how good that game was. Especially since its from Ubisoft.

Sparks of Hope improves the formula in a lot of ways. Better UI, more characters to choose from, as well as diversifing those returning. New gameplay elements like the Sparks help make the fights more interesting and giving the player some more input to strategize.

Sadly, as I am currently getting towards the end of the story, the game loses a bit of its steam. It feels like it was padded out a bit but forgot to add things, like new characters or boss fights, to make that content (a bit more) interesting.

  • I have never played a Kirby game before. Sure, I looked at the some of them for a brief second thanks to something like the 3DS Ambassador Program or (S)NES collection on Switch, but never have I really invested any time into this franchise.

This game was a blast. Cute little blop with some neat abilties and game-specific ideas. Just like with the 'The Legend of Zelda' Franchise: I am now on board and ready to play more in the future.

(but I feel like with Kirby, I will only go forward, not backwards like with Zelda)

  • and all its clones this game spawned. Normally I am not a fan of score attack games, but adding roguelike/lite aspects to it was just what these kind of games were missing.

Vampire Survivor and co. can be so addictive. You get stronger and stronger with each level up, destroying hundreds of enemies at once. Only games like Overwatch are worse with the amount of effects on the screen (and I would argue that its actually easier to keep up with what is actually happening).

But thats not all: Most of them are dirt cheap, have demos (or "Prologues") and an unhealthy amount of content.

Other "Arena Action Roguelikes" I can recommend: Soulstone Survivors, Brotato, 20 Minutes till Dawn

  • The original Supraland was fantastic. One of the few games I completed to 100% and enjoyed the whole ride of it. Followed by a supposedly mediocre DLC, which I simply skipped, we now got a worthy sequel. Granted I haven't had the same drive to do everything, it was still fun to return to the miniature world of Supraland.

  • Nintendo simply decided to add 48 new race tracks as DLC to an already great game. So far only 3 "waves" have been released, but those 6 cups have been great. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still such a fun game and its only "down" here because I haven't played enough of the DLC.

  • Its like Two Point Hospital, only that patients are now students and your doctors change into professors. It was fun to see the different and wacky school courses, but its just too similar to the first game and the Management and Building aspects stayed way too easy and simple.

  • A fun puzzle game with a neat presentation that ends when you thought the game is about to start.
