Innovative. A good companion piece to the Jackson films. 0

"Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor" blends the open-world adventure of "Assassin's Creed" with the melee combat of "Batman: Arkham Asylum". It also features the skill progression and battle tactics from "Far Cry 3". In another words, it's a derivative action game. But it's also innovative thanks to the brilliant Nemesis System which adds a fresh aspect to the now standard "sandbox" actioner. This new feature (which changes the power structure of the enemy hierarchy) will most likely influence a num...

"True Crime: Streets of L.A." meets "Shenmue". 0

"Sleeping Dogs" began life as "True Crime: Hong Kong" before the property was purchased by Square Enix from Activision. But the game still feels exactly like another "True Crime" installment. It is a GTA-inspired open world action title with an emphasis on the martial arts. Story wise, this plays like "Infernal Affairs: The Video Game". You play as Wei Shen, an American undercover cop who gets in with the Triads to topple them. He was raised in the gritty streets of Hong Kong, so he is instantl...

Like "Bioshock", it is one of the greatest video games ever made. 0

"Bioshock" is considered by many to be one of the greatest video games ever made. Lead designer Ken Levine's sci-fi-themed horror opus transcended the boundaries of the FPS genre with two major aspects; the gorgeous but horrifying world of Rapture and the exceptional story featuring the memorable antagonist Andrew Ryan. In many ways, "Bioshock Infinite" is like a remake of the original concept. The setting and scenario has changed, but the basic plot is the same: a man with a shady pack enters i...

Arguably the PS3's best exclusive game. 0

Gripping. That's a good one-word description for Naughty Dog's masterpiece. A cross between Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" and Robert Kirkman's "The Walking Dead", Sony's "The Last of Us" is one of those classic video games that ranks up with the great fictional works. Like a great TV show or movie, it is an emotional cinematic experience. Kudos to the great writing and directing of Neil Druckman and Bruce Straley and the acting of Troy Baker (Joel), Ashley Johnson (Ellie) and company. I'm sure if...

It's like GTA for the Wi-Fi Generation. 0

Ubi Soft's "Watch Dogs" is like "Grand Theft Auto" for the Wi-Fi generation. It was hyped due to an impressive demo shown at E3 2012. And while it's not one of the great open-world action games, it is perfectly entertaining. The game's protagonist is a gun-wielding hacker named Aiden Pearce whose daughter is murdered as a result of a hack gone wrong. As the game begins, he's on the search for the mystery man behind the hit. His journey for justice sends him into the underworld of a futuristic Ch...

A breath of fresh air for the FPS genre. 0

BluePoint's XBOX 360 port of Respawn Entertainment's debut game for the XBOX ONE is a very good one. I've played both console versions and aside from the visuals, they are both identical in terms of content and performance. The good thing about the 360 version is that it loads matches much faster than its bigger brother. "Titanfall" can be described as "Call of Duty" with mechs, but that isn't entirely accurate. It's more like an evolution of the FPS genre due to the ability to double jump and w...

The worst in the series. Fun, yet heavily flawed. 0

It's a shame that "Assassin's Creed: Unity", the first game in the series created exclusively for next-gen consoles, is a disappointment. A follow-up to the superior "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag", "Unity" was plagued with massive bugs and technical issues on launch day. More than a month later, developer Ubi Soft Montreal updated it with a fourth patch, 6.7 gigs in size (!) that resolved most of the horrible pop-up and poor framerate. The game now performs much better, but it was always the ...

Bungie's "Mass Effect"-like FPS is a decent shooter. 0

Developer Bungie's "Halo" trilogy was a landmark achievement for the FPS genre. The original game (along with "Goldeneye 007") proved that console-exclusive shooters could rank up with the great PC FPS games. "Halo 2" revolutionized online multiplayer gaming on XBOX Live and the third game introduced Forge, a powerful tool for would-be map creators. Unfortunately,"Destiny", a blend of "Halo" and "Mass Effect", isn't quite as masterful. It can be fun with friends, but grinding out your character ...

This is basically "Battlefield 3.5". Good, but nothing too new. 0

The modern day shooter peaked six years ago with the release of "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare". Since then, military-themed FPS games have bombarded the market. They are all virtually the same in content. All offer the same basic multiplayer rules and all contain a story mode featuring the usual Hollywood action clichés. This latest "Battlefield" doesn't break that trend. In fact, it could be called "Battlefield 3.5" since it feels like an expansion pack to its 2011 predecessor. But des...

Infinity Ward's weakest COD. It's fun, but no masterpiece. 0

Before I begin, let me just point out that Infinity Ward IS the creator of the "Call of Duty" franchise. Before they created their masterpiece "Modern Warfare" for game consoles, the developers had made the very first "Call of Duty" in 2003 strictly for the PC. An acclaimed WW II FPS, COD was an alternative to its PC brethren "Battlefield" and "Medal of Honor". Infinity Ward made a sequel in 2005 which was also released on the XBOX 360 to great acclaim. When MW was released in 2007, the series e...
