Also, Jeff and Dan pointing out the noticeable dip in animation quality reminds me of this page from an old parody comic called "Buttlord GT" (listen, the early 00's were a different time). A lot of that comic does not hold up in the slightest, but I think this particular joke is still funny.

When people rag on DBZ filler their minds tend to go to all of the newly added story arcs (some lasting only an episode and others lasting weeks) but to be honest a lot of that stuff is pretty entertaining, especially if you're a kid being introduced to this show for the first time with no external knowledge of the comic. The really problematic thing about DBZ's pacing is how they stretch out main story beats across multiple episodes - like the Spirit Bomb, or just the fight in general. This is my first time watching the Kai version and it's highly refreshing to be able to blaze through this section of the show so briskly!

No foolin', for the longest time after I started checking out anime shows in the 90s, I thought this exact thing. It's what the word "filler" means at first thought, the "ye gods, its ANIMATION, stop with the 10 seconds of no actual animation" heh
