genpatton7: Best of 2010

List items

  • Not surprising seeing as it took GOTY at the VGA's, Red Dead Redemption is my game of the year. To preface, I'm a huge western genre fan, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is one of my favorite films of all time and this game finally scratched that itch. Read Dead is an improvement in almost every sense from the GTA entries which preceded it, with a more manageable shooting mechanic, fun story missions, entertaining characters, and a simply magnificent environment. I sat down and played this game for 10 hours at a time and loved every minute of it, simply the best game of 2010.

  • Battlefield is finally brought back to its rightful home on the PC with Bad Company 2. The game offers some of the best online fps action since Battlefield 2, including some awe-inspiring destructibility courtesy of the Frostbite 2.0 engine. This is by far the best multiplayer online fps of 2010 and the game that I played most this year.

  • While hard to remember at this state in the year, the immense set pieces of Mass Effect 2 and the incredible character development still stand out in my mind. A campaign that most games aspire to be, Bioware expanded upon and simplified the original Mass Effect beautifully in this masterful RPG sequel.

  • One of the games I enjoyed most this year and the first platinum trophy for me on the PS3. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is a game that I found difficult to put down; it's a game that has the fun-factor nailed with an extremely enjoyable online experience and a compelling progression/comparison system. For those reasons alone, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit is my 2010 racing game of the year.

  • This year it seems all the best games have one thing in common: immersion. Perhaps 2010 is the year of immersion as games like Heavy Rain take storytelling to a whole different level. The quick time actions that account for the gameplay in Heavy Rain are surprisingly visceral; knowing that actions can lead to the death of a character, I often found myself frantically trying to ace every quick time event to get my character out of danger. With the least direct control of any game I played this year, Heavy Rain was the game that I found myself most engaged and focused on while playing. With some of the best storytelling of the year, Heavy Rain will keep you guessing up to the last minute, it's a ride I'm glad I didn't miss out on.

  • My first entry into the Civilization series and one I am very glad I made. As a life-long fan of the Total War series of games I decided to dip my toe into a true TBS game, little did I know that it would bite it off. Civilization V is a deep and rich experience, a game that is (now) easy to play but challenging to master.

Civ V is the perfect my-first-civ game, the game makes it extremely easy to grasp the basics and manage your empire. However, this is not a game for those strapped of time or low on patience, expect to spend 10 hours on each game. It's also a game that's damned hard to put down, in the words of Ryan Davis: "Civ V should be classified as a schedule 1 narcotic."

  • I was very skeptical about this game pre-launch, a change in creative director and a year between releases had all but convinced me this game would be the demise of the Assassin's Creed series. Boy am I glad I was wrong, with the best open city environments to date in the series, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood incorporates everything that was great in the sequel and expands upon it with stellar multiplayer modes and a throughly entertaining assassin's assist system. Although Assassin's Creed 2 contains the better campaign, the entire Brotherhood package makes it the best Assassin's Creed game to date.

  • A game I would've loved to put at #2 or #3 on my list but just couldn't due to the plethora of bugs I have to trudge through every time I open the exe. On the brighter side I love being in New Vegas, it's an environment that makes me giddy as I traverse it. The story missions and characters also seem much improved from Fallout 3. Overall, New Vegas is just such a cool place to be and that's why it makes it to my top 10.

  • Although it's a game where the frustration factor far outweighs the enjoyment factor for me, SC2's stellar RTS campaign and multiplayer legs earn it a top 10 placing.

  • I wanted a dark horse on my list and I think I've achieved that with Lead & Gold. A game that can in no way compare in scale to the likes of Red Dead Redemption or Fallout: New Vegas; Lead & Gold has some very simple but extremely polished third-person-shooter gameplay. It's a game that does one thing but does it extremely well. Unfortunately, this game is all but dead due to the lack of players online, it's a shame more people didn't pick this game up and experience some truly tight and fun shooter gameplay.
