Not the best Zelda, but still quite good 0

So I finally got around to playing this! And well, it's pretty good! But it's not super excellent. It's better than the two Zeldas for the NES but not better than any other Zelda I can think of.  This is Zelda, and it plays like Zelda, so I won't talk about the gameplay in detail. There's eight dungeons, at the end of each one there's a relic of some sort that you have to collect, there's an ocarina, a sword, a shield, and a lot of running around finding stuff. Tadaaa! Zelda gameplay!  So what w...

A rather simple TBS game 0

Woohooo, Age of Empires: The Age of Kings! What the hell is it!?!  Well it's a turn based strategy game for the Nintendo DS. It's a turn based version of the real time Age of Empires II for the PC. If you don't know what a turn based strategy game is, just think of chess. Players take turns moving their units, and that's pretty much it.  So how good is this? Well, it's good. It's not anything extraordinary, it's definitely no Advance Wars. It's also a rather simple game, it's set in medieval tim...

A mario rip-off with terrific music 0

There's not much to say about Giana Sisters DS. It's a remake of the original Super Mario Bros rip-off "The Great Giana Sisters", and you know what, it still feels like a rip-off. In my mind, it's basically a less good version of the original super mario bros, but with better graphics, more complex level design and absolutely astounding music.   The thing with Sisters is that it's a different game than the Mario games. The platforming is not based on momentum or speed, you can't even run in this...

An amazing revival of 2D Mario 0

I don't like to ramble on and on in my reviews lately, and there isn't much to say about this game: It's great. Gameplay wise, it's a 2D mario game. Soundwise, it's a mario game. Graphically, it's an amazing looking 2d mario game. The structure of the game is very similar to past 2d marios. Really, it's just the evolution of those old 2d platformers we used to play as kids.  It's great.  So are there any problems? Well, a few minor ones. First off, I feel that most of the powerups are too specif...

Not as good as it's hyped up to be 2

Well I was disappointed with Bioshock. Everyone makes such a big deal out of it, how it's one of the best games ever and bla bla, but I just didn't get into it. Do I think it's a quality game? Yeah. But no matter how much quality there is in a game, if it doesn't hook me, it doesn't! I think one of the big failures of the game is that it didn't make me interested in its world. I just was never that curious about rapture and what had happened there. I had previously read somewhere some bits and p...

The game that perfected the modern 3D platformer is still great! 0

Super Mario 64 was the first 3D platformer that truly worked, and honestly it's surely still one of the best. I can't claim to be an expert in 3D platformers, I've only recently started to play them again after a 10 year hiatus or so, but I can tell you that Super Mario 64 is still infinitely playable today, no questions asked. All of the stages are absolute pleasures to play in, it sometimes seems like every moment you spend jumping and flying around is filled with pure bliss. The controls are ...

Absolutely magical 0

Super Mario Bros 3 is a true classic. I honestly that there's nothing wrong with this game, it was absolutely perfect when it was first released in 1990, and it is still awesome to play today. The music, the costumes, the gameplay, even the graphics hold up really well today. So why did I give it 4.5 stars instead of 5? Simply because the version included in Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES is better. That's it. A timeless classic....

Wow does this game sucks 0

So yeah, honestly, what? I was hoping this game would be good but sadly it wasn't. A lot of the same complaints I made in my DQVIII review can also be applied here, but worse because this is a worse game than DQVIII. Now I played this game a while ago, so I don't remember every nook and cranny of it, but basically: WHERE'S THE STORY? I'm serious, WHERE IS IT?WHO'S THE FREAKING CHIPMUNK IN MY PARTY? Why is the main character a pathetic farce of a copy of Goku. No he's probably more like a c...

A true classic 0

THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE FANMADE REMAKE MANIAC MANSION DELUXE FOR THE PC, and not the officially released PC versions.God damn is this game good. Or maybe I should say, holy hot darn is this game STILL good! I'm amazed at how well this game plays over all these years. So what is there to say? It's adventure gaming at its finest. Which is strange because the game is pretty much the grandfather of all graphic adventure games, at least the point and click variety. It's still full of charm and wit. It...

An incredible leap over Ultima IV 0

Ultima V is a thoroughly impressive game. It takes everything Ultima IV brought to the table and polishes it many times over. Unlike Ultima IV there is actually a story in this one, one of total chaos to boot. Lord British is gone, Blackthorn is reigning supreme and the shadowlords are running amok. Throughout the game there is that heavy feeling of oppressiveness which is really well done for a 1988 game. The fact that the early game is incredibly tough contributes greatly to this feeling; ea...

A major breakthrough back in 1985, but how does it fare today? 0

Ultima IV is often seen as being one of the most important rpg in the history of the genre, and is often included in top games of all time lists and whatnot. It's true that the game was truly incredible back in the day and it has surprisingly aged well, or at least some parts of it aged well. Unlike the previous games in the series you don't have a big bad guy to kill, instead here you need to be an example to the people of Britannia and become an avatar, the perfect representation of everythin...

A game that spawned a genre. 0

Ultima III is often seen as one of the most important games ever. It brought RPG mechanics to a whole new level with party based strategic combat. It's basically the distant ancestor of strategy rpgs. The game is a big leap over its predecessors Ultima I and II who were simpler action rpgs. In Ultima III you create a party of four characters to play as. In structure the game is more similar to Ultima II than Ultima I which is surprising since Ultima I was a superior game. However I think Richard...

The second and possibly the worst game in the Ultima series. 0

The second game in the Ultima series is easily the worst. Ultima I was slightly incomprehensible because of its weird mesh of subjects but Ultima II just totally goes into overdrive. Minax, the apprentice and lover of Mondain whom you killed at the end of Ultima I, is pissed off. She decides to destroy your homeworld...earth. So using the 'timegates' that spawned after the death of Mondain she comes to Earth, causes an holocaust in 2111 or something and then hides at the origin of times thinking...

The first official game in the Ultima series. 0

Ultima I is the first official game in the Ultima series. It is a rather straightforward action rpg, sort of like Diablo but 10 or 15 years earlier. Gamespot states that the PC version of Ultima was released in 1980 but that is a mistake; Ultima was first released in 1980 for the Apple II and the Atari 8-Bit and was then remade in 1986 for the PC, Commodore 64, MSX and Apple II. So the version I am reviewing now is the 1986 remake for the PC, not the 1980 original which I have never played. Lik...

Could they have made this game any more long winded? 0

Man does this game take a long time. And no it isn't a good thing. Now I thought I would like this game a lot more than I did. The problem, is that this isn't really a classic RPG. It's old school flavored, but it's not old school. That's obvious, ain't it? You can't be an old school RPG if you have a 2005 release date, I know. But that the time I hadn't quite realized that.See, a classic RPG isn't all about level grinding. People seem to think that the minute you play an RPG that is about level ...

Who the hell designed this game? 0

I guess this is what happens when some dude gets a stupid idea. It seems that Square, after the success of Final Fantasy, decided to revolutionize RPG's or something. The genre was still young at the time, so I don't see why someone might have thought it was broken, but it seems they did. So they thought "Hey, how about if you can ONLY level up the abilities you actually use!?! After all, a magic user won't get any stronger right by doing magic right? And a fighter won't get better at magic by p...

A good old-school RPG. 0

The Good:I really liked the simplicity of the game. Really, modern JRPG's are great and all, but there's something to be said about a game as simple as Phantasy Star. You go out, kill stuff, go up in levels, rinse repeat. You also do down dungeons to get some good loot.Really, that's pretty much all there is to Phantasy Star, and I loved it. That's why I played the game, and I got what I wanted out of it. To enjoy Phantasy Star, you need to know exactly why you're playing it. You're playing it t...

One of the greats 0

When Knights of the Old Republic was announced, it was like a dream come true for Star Wars fans AND RPG fans. The combination of the best North American RPG developer in Bioware and the Star Wars franchise seemed to good to be true. And the final product is not just good, but great. KOTOR is a dreamlike middle way mix of a typical american RPG like Bioware's own Baldur's Gate series and a japanese RPG like Final Fantasy, at least that's the way I see it. It has a streamlined, more personal a...

Shows that the series keeps improving. 0

It took me a while to play San Andreas. After going through GTAIII and Vice City in a relatively short period of time, I felt sort of burned out from Grand Theft Auto so I skipped San Andreas when it was released in late 2004. Recently however I decided that the time was right to plunge myself again, and here I am, being very impressed by the latest installment of this extremely popular series. In San Andreas you play the role of Carl Johnson, a man raised in the hood with his family of two bro...

Unsatisfying game but it does give you an easy 1000 points! 0

I will be honest; I bought King Kong for the achievement points. I didn't have a lot of them in my profile and I wanted to have a quick boost, so I immediately searched for King Kong as I knew it was one of the easiest source of achievement points on the Xbox 360, and I was right! Or rather, they were right, they as in the people who played it before me and mentioned how short and easy the game was. The story of the game follows the story of the movie of the same name (well, except without the ...

Not really better than the original 0

You've seen this game before, it was called Top Spin 1. Seriously I'm disappointed with 2K sports, there was a two years and a half gap between this game and the first one and this is all the improvements we get? There's hardly any improvements, and I'd go as far as to say that we get the opposite! First, this is supposed to be a next gen game, but it sure doesn't look like it. The graphics engine looks the same as the one in Top Spin 1. Come on you can't fool us, the first one looked awesome b...

Great RPG that starts out slow but finishes very strong. 0

Took me a while to play Jade Empire but I finally got around to it and I don't regret my choice. Most people I talked to told me that the game was good but not memorable, well I’m here to disagree because I found this game VERY memorable. Most say that the gameplay sucks, and in a way they would be right. It is very repetitive, all of the styles have only a couple of attacks each (strong attack, normal attack), which can make combat grow old fast when you have to rely on only one or two styles...

An entertaining but slightly easy game 0

I had a lot of fun with Tales of Symphonia. It's a very very long rpg, in fact it's the longest Japanese RPG i've played since Xenogears. It's also very fast paced and dynamic, using the typical Tales battle system which feels more like a fighting game than an RPG. The only real problem with the gameplay is that the game is a a tad bit too easy, especially compared to the previous Tales games I played, namely Tales of Phantasia (which Tales of Symphonia is a prequel to) and Tales of Destiny II....

An improvement over the original, but feels a bit tired 0

I enjoyed Doom 3, but it wasn't the most original concept in the world, and I feel that after 20 hours of that game, I'm done with Doom 3 for the rest of my life. And playing Resurrection of Evil proved that to me. The game is an improvement over Doom 3 in every facet, except there's less emails to read, the game is more straightforward action and it is shorter. Oh and, they have the dual barreled shotgun, which I absolutely love :) The game in some ways is actually easier than Doom 3 because ...

Surprisingly awesome! 3

I actually had great hopes for this game before release, being myself a fan of the original Bard's Tale. To my great disappointment it wasn't well received by critics so it sort of went off of my radar. Eventually my friend bought himself a copy and told me it was an okay game with some funny quotes, so I asked him to lend me his copy and who would have thought? This game is great! You're the Bard, a sort of Han Solo type character who's only in it for himself. And unlike Solo, the Bard's heart...

And yet another superb Ace Combat game. 0

Ace Combat is surely one of the best gaming experiences I've had all year. I was first introduced to the series with Ace Combat 4, which was recommended to me by forum posters on Gamespot. I totally loved it, which forced me to keep my eyes peeled for the next installment. I didn't buy the game right away at launch but eventually I saw it at my local video game store for a good price and decided to get it. After all, I thought it was a sure bet, and it was. Ace Combat 5, like 4, takes place in ...

An average adventure game. 0

Although I love adventure games this game never really appealed to me when I was looking at screenshots. It took me years to eventually break down and buy it and I did it based on the critical acclaim it was getting on this site mainly and I seriously can't see what is so great about it. The graphics look good when everything is static but once you start moving everything falls apart. This game surely has some of the worst animations ever made, specifically the walking animation. And even worse...

One of the best racing games ever made. 0

Funny how things work. I really didn't like PGR2, at all. I thought it felt average and I didn't like the focus on kudos. I wasn't sure what to expect from PGR3. I tried the demo and I can't say I was impressed. But I got the chance to buy it cheap so I thought what the hell let's do it. Let's just say that I do not regret my purchase in the least. I think part of what makes PGR3 click that much more for me than PGR2 did are the achievement points. In PGR2 I didn't have the motivation to try t...

Remakes of Mega Man 1-3 for the genesis? Can't go wrong, right? 0

Well, it did. You'd think that 16 bit remakes of some of the best games in the Mega Man series would be a surefire hit, but I feel that they truly missed the mark. There's only one thing that this compilation does better than the original versions, and that thing is the graphics. Everything else is worse. Gameplay wise the game feels good, except for the shooting. In previous Mega Man games, the speed of your shooting was limited only by your ability to press the fire button quickly. In Wily War...

Excellent ports of excellent games 0

The NES Mega Man games are truly iconic, and this compilation truly does those games justice. The quality of the ports seem to be perfect which is impressive. Most people seem to believe that Mega Man 2 and 3 are the best in the series, but I feel that 4 and 5 are as good if not better than those two. Mega Man 1 and 6 are a couple notches lower. Mega Man 7 is a good game, but it starts to feel a bit off and Mega Man 8 is truly crazy. It's not that Mega Man 8 is a bad game, it's just incredibly...

Metroid Prime 2! Monkeys! Seriously, a great game with some flaws 0

Metroid Prime 2 is a pretty good game. The graphics look great for a last generation title. The music generally fits the game well and there is a few standout pieces. The gameplay is as good as ever. So where does it fall? Well, let's just say that it took me 20 hours to finish this game and they were, easily, the longest 20 hours ever. You're thrown into a world with barely a soul alive, there is no story or cutscenes, you have only four environment types to explore which equals to a LOT of re...

A darn good game! 0

Yep, it's Zelda: The wind waker, and it's a freaking good game. Everything in this game meshes so well together, the music is great, the ambiance is heart warming. It's just a sweet sweet game. The only real problem is that the sailing around can get a little tedious, especially if you decide to explore the map early on in the game. For anyone that wants to play WW, I'm telling you, WAIT UNTIL YOU GET A BUNCH OF ITEMS BEFORE EXPLORING. It'll be that much more enjoyable. The only level I didn't ...

Everyone is awesome in this game, thus this game is awesome. 0

Oh what a surprise. Never thought I'd like this game as much as I do. I'm a huge Resident Evil fan and i've finished every RE out there and this one is the icing on the cake. There isn't a lot you can say on a near perfect game. This is the evolution of the RE system and it is superb. Although people like to say that the gameplay is drastically different than past Resident Evils, to me it felt like it was the same control scheme except that they put the camera on Leon's shoulder instead of havi...

Great way to end the 'classic' Final Fantasy line. 0

This game is hard for me to review. On one hand my heart says it's a 9 on the other hand my head says it's an 8. This game is all about heart and emotions and is very nostalgic for fans of the older Final Fantasy games, especially the NES ones and the first two on the Snes. The setting of the game is back to the medieval tone of the pre-FF6 Final Fantasy's, and it's a nice change. I've always been more of a fan of that setting than of the Industrial settings Square seems to cherish lately. Bl...

One of the most innovative strategy games i've played. 0

The first time I played the demo of Homeworld 2, I knew I had something great on my hands. It felt like nothing I had ever seen before and it looked awesome. That lead me to buy Homeworld: Cataclysm and the original Homeworld since I decided I wanted to start at the beginning, not at the end. So here I am, reviewing Homeworld. The story in Homeworld is interesting. You are the Kushans (or the Taiidan, you can choose but both stories are strangely the same. In regard to Homeworld continuity th...

Ever since the Arc the Lad Collection came out, i've been interested in trying the series out. I didn't buy the Collection because the price of entry was quite high and you know..paying so much premium for a bunch of (old) PS1 rpg's wasn't right up my alley. But after playing Arc the Lad: Twilight of the spirits, you can be sure that I will snatch up the Collection on ebay eventually. The game is divided in two stories. At first you control Kharg, a human, who's basically THE man in town since ...

Short, fun and interesting but could have been better. 2

Parasite Eve is a strange, slightly innovative game. You can tell playing this game that Square tried to do something without putting too much money on it. First, they took the story of a popular japanese horror novel, inserted it into the game, then mixed a Resident Evil system of weapon management with an rpg leveling system, and finished with a battle system highly influenced by action rpg's. The result is a game that feels like it doesn't know what it is, but is good nonetheless. Although ...

A good game that really felt like it belonged on the PC 0

Rainbow Six 3 on the Xbox was the first time I ever played a 'tactical' shooter. I wasn't disappointed, but I can't say I was impressed either. First things first, I thought the story sucked. The whole oil crisis in Venezuela thing just felt crappy, and probably ranks as one of the worst storyline ever. Just keep those for movies not for games. Getting into the gameplay department, I liked the fact that I could choose a whole bunch of guns but what use is this if 2 or 3 of them dominate? I wou...

Great stealth game. 0

Splinter Cell is the ultimate stealth simulator, bar none. That being said, it does have definite problems that were implemented to keep it's stealth personality intact but that may come into conflict when you, the gamer, don't really want to follow the rules to the letter. First off, let's get this out of the way: The graphics are great. Even though the game is more than 2 years old it still looks awesome, especially the shadow effects. Although your enemies look a bit bland, Sam Fisher himsel...

Good, could be better 0

This game is better than the first Fight Night in most aspects, although some parts would be in dire need of balancing. First off, before I get into anything else, the main problem everyone's talking about are the haymakers. Haymakers are powerful punches that you do by pulling your arm back and then unleashing the blow. The problem with those is that the CPU AND many online players abuse the move, they basically do only that. Now, it's not very difficult to deal with them, just learn some g...
