It's Time to Next Gen! 3DS and Wii U operational.

Had a bear of a weekend work-wise, but managed to pick up the gold 3DS and a Wii U before I started work on Saturday. Tried setting up the Wii U at work during a two-hour break in activity, but the gamepad refused to pair with the console. This led to a dumb hate/rage spiral, and me wasting most of Sunday taking the console back. Took it home, and Sunday evening finally relented and tried hooking it up to my home setup—worked fine.

Both the 3DS and Wii U System Transfer processes transformed any remaining shreds of anger or buyer's remorse into pure joy. I mean, I'm still a little bummed that the system retails at $430 here, but the little Pikmin animations reached into me and rearranged every thought process to be a fat dude screaming KAWAII~ at an inanimate piece of electronics. Fun times.

After I ported over the Wii catalog I realised I could play Super Mario Galaxy, a game I figured I'd gotten halfway through before abandoning? I guess I probably am close to halfway through it still, but I've got all the rooms unlocked and I managed to eventually remember enough controls to be able to finish a few fun stars ("Gusty Garden's Gravity Scramble", "Major Burrows's Daredevil Run"). It's probably not the greatest idea to jump back into the game after having let it fall out of my memory, but I seem to be doing not too terribly badly. I'd like to complete as much of the game as I can before 3D World releases this weekend, for pretty obvious reasons!

A Link Between Worlds is great. What's even better is that there aren't any FAQs out yet. Currently I don't have Pegasus Boots, and I'm seeing a bunch of items reachable with them. Instead of just looking up where to get them though, I get to explore the game, like normal. Like I used to. I've died a couple of times, but finding the upgrade system has helped smooth out some of the problems with that. I'm really enjoying myself so far. It's pretty easy to slip into flow state, either tooling around in the world or trying to puzzle out one of the dungeons.

I've also been playing the Bravely Default demo. It's a successor to Final Fantasy V, in that the core gameplay is the standard JRPG system, and character progression follows an arc similar to FFV's job system. I'm pretty certain that I'll end up buying it at some point.

Games I feel like I should probably get someday soon:

  • Kirby's Epic Yarn

  • Xenoblade Chronicles

  • Cave Story 3D

  • Rhythm Heaven Fever
