This may be too far down into the weeds, but can you describe what actually blew up? Behind the scenes stuff is always interesting to me, and I'm wondering if it was the unlikely but much dreaded double hard drive failure (which happened to me once at work, which is why I have 4 copies of everything important to me), or if something else actually let the magic smoke out.
Working in IT, specifically data center infrastructure and operations, I can definitely say never jinx yourself saying "Both of these can't fail". I have seen some fun stuff in my time. One that comes to mind is 2 or 3 years ago I worked for a managed hosting company which meant we physically hosted servers that customers could lease.
Anyways customer has an 8 disk RAID 5 which we recommended against since more than 1 failed disk would kill the array. They obviously did not listen. Disk failed. Swapped it, during the rebuild 2nd disk fails killing the array. We try to recover it but it is toast. All good though! They have a backup server! Backup server has same drive config....and a failed drive....a few days later a 2nd drive failed on that as well and the data was lost. I don't know what exactly they lost but I know they requested we send the drives to a 3rd party data recovery company.
Moral of the story, if it can fail it will, even the best backup system can't be bullet proof.
reminds me of code hero which strung if funders on with bs updates for like 2 years. That one raised like 200k. When doing some digging the creator of the project had created other projects in which he had received funding for in one way or another (not kickstarter) and never produced a product for any of them.
