Man, that Half-life 2... Still a great game.

So I finally manned up and started playing Half-Life 2 again.

I finished the game the first time it came out, way before there were Steam achievements, then I never touched it again. Didn't really find any use for the achievements.

I'm not sure why I booted it up, I think Zach suggested I play it again and I agreed with him, and I think I caught the achievement bug. After an hour or so, I started thinking, "Holy cowpies! Half-life 2 actually holds up even after all these years! That's crazy!" The shooting still feels good, and it actually looks good after all these years... Well, admittedly, it looks a little dated, and it has some age jank in it, but all in all, it's still a really good game.

Gotta get that grav gun again and throw cans of paint at stuff!

Only it makes me a little sad... I want me some Half-life 3! or at least Half-life 2: Episode 3.

Hope Gabe Newell and the Valve people are doing well with that.

Yeah I only just got the motivation to play Half-Life 2 for the first time around November/December last year and was utterly impressed and entertained. Fantastic game. Haven't gotten around to beating Episode 1 yet though..

Indeed. I wanted to beat them last spring break, but only managed to beat portal 1 with most acheevos, and episode 1. Will do vanilla hl2 and ep2 completely, this summer...

Yeah, man, it just started to sink in on me, not just the gameplay, but the story; I love the fiction of Half-life.

Shit, now I have the urge to buy Half-life 1...

Achievements... Yeah, I still have to get my first S rank.

Yeah, dude, go for episode 2, I enjoyed that one more than episode 1.

Just skip to episode 2. Episode 1 sucks donkey dick and is only like an hour long.

Yeah, dude.  That boat was cool the first time around, doing speed runs and stuff, but it went on for too fucking long.
But I remember back when I played it the first time how amazed I was with how the boat moved in the water, it was wobbly and felt so damn real.  I must admit, I want to ride that boat again... maybe for a minute or so.

@TheMustacheHero: I'm not usually one to skip content, especially if it's canon stuff. But if it's only like an hour like you said then I'll start Episode 2 immediately afterwards. Although I'm not interested in going back into the Half-Life universe just yet. Maybe if Valve announces Half-Life 2: Episode 3/Half-Life 3 during E3 I'll get back into it.

Probably one of the most timeless games of all time. It's amazing how it holds up

Didn't mind the boat segments, thought that boss fight against the helicopter was pretty good

@akiz_jack: An hour is a bit of an exaggeration. I would guess it's more around 4-5 hours. It's the least interesting of the three, but still worth playing IMO.

Almost forgot about that, thanks man.
Yeah, the mounted gun revitalized that boat ride, plus that satisfying FU feeling when that damn chopper finally fell... That was so satisfying.

I think episode 1 is worth playing for the elevator level alone.

Even the original Half-Life holds up well compared to other shooters that came out around the same time, and even a couple years later.

But yeah, episode 1 had some interesting parts like the dark level, but I feel like an edited down version should have been the end of Half-Life 2. HL2's ending felt a little anti climactic to me, and the SPOILERS ******* train ride at the end of EP1 would have felt better IMO.

Episode 2 was great though. The vehicle part started to feel a little disjointed, as in drive, get out, solve puzzle, drive some more, get out, ect. But man, so many cool gameplay moments in EP2 and the story was awesome too.

I played through the first half-ish of it  a few months ago- didn't care for it. I guess I just don't get why everyone thinks Gordon Freeman is so rad- when that scientist told me I was a man of few words, with a wink and a nod, I just wanted to shut the game off.

While it does go on for quite a long time it manages to pull of something a lot of linear shooters do not: it makes you feel like you've traveled. Too many games are content to just have a load screen be the transition between locations, but driving that boat around really gives you the sense that Gordon covering a lot of ground. Granted it could have been done better since it is filled with a lot of  basic driving without a whole lot to do, but you have to give Valve credit for what the boat sequence does for the overall feel of the game.

I just reinstalled this last week and have been playing it on and off, making it my fifth play-through since release. Easily one of the great games ever made.

That level sucked for me I had to redo that level like 70 times.
