I've been meaning to read this for years, specifically the KR0 portion. I remember reading the first few sentences and, as a pet person, saying, "This seems heavy and intense, but worth a read". Flash forward a few years and I just lost my Frenchie, Ganon, about a month ago, very suddenly.
I wanted to listen to the KR0 soundtrack and was trying to think of a particular song, so I googled "giantbomb game of the year kentucky route zero". How could I miss? This list was the third hit on the search. And I was effectively like "shit, good time to read this".
This piece spoke to me on many levels. I played KR0 probably about a year ago and loved it- especially the music. It was just so... different, interesting, soothing, satisfying, catchy, and so much more. I'm listening to it as I write this. The story was surreal and weird and riveting and bizarre in the best way. The characters and locations felt alive, lived in, not just concepts or tools that the writers made up.
The story of Ico is devastating but beautiful. If you're not a pet person, you may not understand and that's ok. The loss of Ganon for me and my wife, Kim, was sudden, awful, heart-wrenching, and whatever terrible feeling you can think of. I think about and miss him everyday. Kim used to constantly take pictures of him, for which I teased her. I'm so grateful to have those pictures now, and wish I took more myself.
Ganon became a part of me that, now he's gone, I can't ever get back. He was a sweet but grumpy, hungry, weird little boy that I could never live without. But now I have to. I'm still coping and grieving- I think I'll get there but maybe I won't.
On a lighter note, Kim and I rescued a black lab mix who we call Sif. She's a sweetheart and very loving, I'm happy to have her. She can't replace Ganon, and I don't want her to (that's not fair), but again I am thankful she's here. Ganon would hate her (he was grumpy like I said), but I like to think he wouldn't want us to dwell on what happened.
It's likely that no one will ever read this- Scott, GB community or staff, etc.- but I've been waiting to do this for a long time and just turned out that time was now. Thanks again.
