Guns in real life are LOUD

This was my second time at the shooting range with my army friend, and whereas before I fired some small stuff like a pistol, shotgun, and then a mini 14, this time he brought a proper rifle that fired .30-06 rounds, which are pretty big rounds.  It shocked me how god damn loud that gun is.  The weird thing is it doesn't hurt the shoulder at all, there's no pain.   When it fires, there's a massive boom, everything blacks out for a second, and then you have to recover and get back into position for the next shot.  And standing like 25 yards away with no ear protection, you hear a huge boom and then a crack at the end.  The reason I was shocked at how loud it was, is because that's the round the M1 Garand fired in WW2.  It's hard to imagine soldiers firing that thing over and over again with no ear protection.  It's so loud that even with ear protection, standing and waiting for someone to shoot was so tense I was cursing under my breath, and making sure I wouldn't bite my tongue off when it fired.  Games and movies make guns like that sound like a casual thing to shoot off, but holy crap it is so not like that.  In WW2 games these rifles usually aren't even a one hit kill, but in real life that thing would devastate whatever it hits.  Oh, and my friend tried shooting the pistol gangster style to see if there was any benefit, but it was retarded, with brass flying all over us, bad idea.

I heard a rumour that if you do fire a powerful gun sideways, the recoil will beak your wrist. Not sure how true that is, but yeah, the only film I've ever seen with relatively realistic sounding gunfire is Collateral. The guns in that film are so loud and have such an echo on them that anything I see soon after just seems fake.

Yeah, they are pretty loud. I've heard some older ones in real life before. Why else do you think they wear ear protection while firing guns?

You also have to remember that not all guns sound the same. I think I'm more surprised by how loud suppressors are. Or at least, that everyone thinks they know what a silenced pistol sounds like, when that noise is actually totally made up. Or so I've heard...

But yeah, guns do have a fair amount of noise. That's why they want soldiers to wear ear plugs, because a lot of them are getting tinnitus and such.

Yeah, they're loud as shit. That's why you wear ear protection while firing. When I was on the .50 cal range, I just daydreamed I was storming the beaches of Normandy.

GUNS IN REAL LIFE SHOULD NOT BE LEGAL IN AMERICA, because if a redneck doesn't like you they may shoot at your car with a shotgun, plus they ARE THIS LOUD!!!!!!

It probably would, like with a big fat revolver.  I think gangsters adopted the sideways firing method because it's easier to shoot from a car window that way.  Anyway, with movies I think they have to quiet down the gunfire a whole lot to make sure you can still hear people talking.  All the time you see characters talking or shouting as guns are going off, and you can easily make out what they are saying, but if that were real you wouldn't hear a damn thing.  My friend said once in training an ear plug came out, and because they were moving forward on targets, he just had to ignore it, and when he fired his weapon everything went quiet, and it made a sort of slow motion ringing sound in his ear.

Yeah, when I was younger I fired a bunch of different guns. People in games, movies, and TV shows must have really fucked up hearing.

As proud as my granddad would be of me if I did that, I'm already like halfway through college and well on my way to becoming a lawyer. Not to mention that I'm kind of a pussy.

If anyone has seen the movie Cop Land, Sylvester Stallone's character can attest to guns being loud.

Pistols can be fired sideways, but there's a very specific method to it. Isreali SF are taught how, but the method looks nothing like the "gangster style" firing you see in movies. It's a sort of two-hand wrap  but twisted sideways, and it allows for much quicker acquisition of targets, and provides much quicker movement in a full 360 degree arc.

Also, it looks bad-ass.

This just means the begginning scene in saving private ryan is much more realistic than I thought; that and I'm pretty sure soldiers do have ear plugs or some form of ear protection on.

My grandpa was hearing impaired probably thanks to his being in WW2.  I've heard that hearing loss was pretty rampant among WW2 vets.

My dad is a gun collector and professional hunter, so I've heard some loud guns in my time.

Guns are definitely loud. Games and films just haven't really picked up that sound. And you honestly don't know how loud a gun is unless you're actually on a firing range or anything; video clips of people shooting guns do not directly translate 100% of the original audio noise.

Also suppressors making a whistle noise is retarded.

Doesn't sam fisher use that technique in conviction? I remember we fired some .22s in boy scouts and i thought they were pretty loud, cant imagine what a higher caliber sounds like.

I've fired an AR15, a shotgun, a Ruger, and an AK-47.

No ear protection, couldn't hear for about half an hour after.

Fired a 22 and a 40 at a range once and thankfully wore ear plugs because it was an indoor range and it was small. Also, thankfully the range was indoors because I hit the ceiling on my first shot because I really really wasn't expecting that much recoil.

Well...sort of. It's a heavily (hollywood) modified version, but the actual system is called Center Axis Relock. Generally, you're not supposed to resort to one handed operation (as one would imagine), but when forced to, it's much more effective.

A quick little video that shows a bit of what I mean; he's not as highly-trained in it as many, but meh, I was lazy.

Have you fired a rocket launcher? That was the weapon my brother-in-law was most impressed upon using.
