10 Games That Made Me The Gamer I Am Today

I wouldn't call myself a hardcore gamer, but I'm not a casual gamer either... I'm somewhere in between. Video games have always been a part of my life, some times more so than others. When I was a kid, I played what I had access to. As I got older, I branched out into the gaming world. These 10 impacted me the most - games I spent endless hours thoroughly enjoying, and eventually loving. I might not have as much time for gaming that I once did, but I will always come back to these for the rest of my life.

List items

  • I bought Morrowind on a whim at Costco sometime between '03-'04. I knew absolutely nothing about it, and had never played an RPG before. After the initial frustration period, (LOTS of dying. I shelved it for two months, only a couple hours into it) I was determined to play this game that had won so much praise and recognition. I can honestly say I've spent more hours on this game than any other. Months of my life as a teen were spent in Morrowind, and it is still my all-time favorite game. While I do enjoy Oblivion and Skyrim... they can't hold a candle to the immersive experience that was Morrowind.

  • While I played SNES games a fair amount as a kid, I really didn't become a "gamer" until the N64... until Zelda. This game changed me forever. The puzzles, bosses, music... I was hooked from the first time I played it, and it will always hold a special place in my heart.

  • While Ocarina of Time gets all the glory of being one of the best games ever, Majora's Mask has been undeservedly overlooked. As much as I love OoT, Majora's Mask improved on the one thing I felt was lacking in its predecessor - storytelling. The attention to detail is impressive. The emotion the stories evoke is a feat of its own, but add to that a challenging, kick-ass action-rpg? OoT may have the #2 spot on this list for nostalgia reasons, but I wholeheartedly believe Majora's Mask is a superior game.

  • Ah, yes. The game(s) that shipped with our SNES. Even today, some of the later levels are a challenge. Effing hammer bros.

  • My first shooter! It's just as brilliant today as it was in '00. I get so much fun out of the combat simulator, and the replay-ability factor is astounding. If you think CoD:MW on veteran is challenging, try beating all the missions on Perfect Agent. No problem you say? Now do all 30 challenges in the combat simulator. You will hurl your controller across the room, and yet always come back to this wonderful game.

  • If you love old SNES mario games, but for some reason still haven't played this, I strongly encourage you to do so as soon as humanly possible. Open a paypal account to get a copy on eBay if you have to. (Who am I kidding... you'll all just pirate the rom and play on your desktops...) Hiding behind a cartoony, kid-friendly exterior is a classic nintendo game that holds up wonderfully to its mighty brethren. The levels range from simplistic and straightforward to downright maze-like. It's just... fun :)

  • One of the few games on this list that really hasn't aged well for me. Yes, it's still one of my favorites, but given the choice, I'll usually go for Halo 2 or 3. Still, the impact the original had on me is undeniable. I loved the campaign mode, and the feeling of getting that warthog to the very end on time after so many tries... I try not to use this word too often, but to my 13 year old self, this game was truly epic.

  • There's not much to say here. It's a classic, and a staple of any gamer's collection in the 90s. If you didn't own it, you knew someone who did... and were jealous of them.

  • Yet another random purchase of a critically acclaimed game I knew nothing about. Like with Morrowind, this was my first turn-based strategy game. I enjoyed it single-player, but the fun really started when I was playing against friends. As an aside, I still use Leonard Nimoy's tech quotes to this day.

  • This is pretty much the only fighting game I've played with any regularity, likely due to the fact that it's the only one I had access to as a child. My brother kicked my ass almost every match, but even at the ripe old age of 6, I still fought on. Once I grew up and came back to the game, vengeance was mine.
