Extra Lifing It

You know what sucks? I had thought up a (near) perfect blog post for this yesterday, but due to time constraints I wasn't able to "get it on paper". And now I am drawing a complete blank. Ha! Brains!

So I will just write whatever comes to mind regarding my Extra Life venture this year and hope that there is at least some semblence of logic in there.

For those of you who haven't at least checked out the Extra Life topic created my @matt (SHAME ON YOU!) I will be one of the many participants in this glorious event. Glorious? Yes, glorious!

No, cancel that. I meant to say:

GLORIOUS!

Win-win (Mostly)

Why? Because why the fuck not? I get to enjoy one of my favorite hobbies for 24 hours straight and I get to raise some money to help sick kids while doing it? Seriously, it's a win-win. Not doing this is like saying no to a free copy of Fallout 4 two weeks ahead of release. And no, I'm not getting a free copy of Fallout 4. Although, if anyone is feeling particularly generous, I would not decline (in case that wasn't yet obvious).

Oh, right, Extra Life. I said it's a win-win situation. I did not, however, mention the small caveat. Or rather, the "damn it, why does this not work!" pain in the ass caveat. I am talking, of course, about donations. So far, the money really isn't rolling in. More like dripping, like a faucet that someone didn't shut off all the way, except even slower.

So that is kind of bumming me out. Especially since I made sure to get the word out a lot sooner than I did last year, which was like a week or so before the event started. This time, I started getting word a week into October, a full month before the event takes place. Granted, I only really got the word out on Facebook and I don't have all that many people on there. But Facebook is pretty much the only social network I use. I have twitter, but I don't actively use it. And besides, yesterday I found out that my public FB posts automatically go out on Twitter as well, so there is that.

Sweet Swag!

And I didn't just get word out sooner, either. I even went so far as to create a raffle, with some very nice prizes if I do say so myself (two GB store codes, a $15 gift card from Offgamers and a 240GB Kingston SSD!). You'd figure that the chance of winning something nice might spur people on a little, but it doesn't even seem to register on the proverbial needle.

But hey, there's still a good two weeks left before game day and I will keep posting on my FB to remind people. So who know, things might yet change.

You know, now that I think about it, maybe I shouldn't tie those all those prizes to the end goal. Perhaps I should spread it out a little. Say, if I reach $100 I'll give away one store coupon. Another $50 and I'll give away another store coupon.

Hell, let's do that!

Milestones Raffle!

This is my idea for the milestones -> prizes

  • $100 - 1 store coupon for the giant bomb store
  • $150 - A $20 gift card for Offgamers.com
  • $200 - Another store coupon for the giant bomb store!
  • $300 - A Kingston 240GB SSD!

Yep, that'll do nicely I think. I should update my page accordingly asap and get the word out.

Game(s) Time

For now I still have to think of a complete list of games I'll be playing. Unfortunately I don't have many new releases on my PC but my Steam library is plenty big enough to make up a solid list. And if anyone is interested, I will definitely be playing some Rocket League, Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Mount Your Friends.

You know what might be a good idea? How about you check out my Steam Library and make some suggestions for what you think I should play? And please don't suggest the FPS multiplayer games. Unless, of course, you would like to see how much frustration I can handle before I throw everything out of the window.

And if anyone is interested in watching some, I will be starting my stream on November 6th at 10pm PST. I'm doing this because I live in the Netherlands, and that's 7am for me. Provided I did the math right. And honestly... I suck at math. So yay!

Watch Me, Watch Me!

Speaking of seeing, I got a question. Should I webcam or should I not webcam? I'm kind of on the fence about this. Let me explain why:

I will be all of my gaming on the couch (yes, even the keyboard & mouse games). I won't get into detail about why, but let's just say that this is the only feasible way for me to game. Now, my girlfriend will be sitting next to me as well as another friend of mine. My girlfriend has already informed me that she doesn't really want to be on camera for 24 hours on-end. I haven't asked my friend yet, but I think his response will be the same.

So if I do turn on my camera, it'd just be me. Which leads me into the next point: to headset or not to headset. I have a pretty nice wireless headset that I can use for a stream (I think, haven't tested yet), but it might me confusing to peopl watching with me talking to my friends when they're not really saying anything that can be heard on the stream.

So, yeah, to cam or not to cam and to mic or not to mic; those are the two questions.

Info Dump!

My Extra Life page can be found here and my stream for the event can be found here

Lastly, I am still in the process of setting up my live stream (quality, encoding, scenes blablabla) and I will, occasionally, do a little stream test to see how things are looking. If anyone is interested in jumping in on those streams just follow my Twitter

Tips?

And lastly, does anyone have any tips to improve my chances of getting donations?
