Listening back to this, and screw Marco for complaining about the Nintendo download readings. That was, and remains, the best thing Giant Bomb ever did.

Still one of my favorite QL’s. Pretty much the last gasp of good GB stuff, too, sadly because Dan joined soon after.

It’s always fun coming back to this video, so I can remember how terrible Sega was.

The Venetian Blinds quick look may still be the best thing Giant Bomb has ever done.

I think masocore makes more sense than splatforner - it’s both broader and more illustrative.

“Splatformer” sounds like Da Blob. A masocore game can bea game of any genre (though, admittedly, primarily platformers and shmups. No one’s made a masocore walking simulator, for example. (Well, aside from Everyone’s Gone To The Rapture. Boom!)) as long as it is punishing while still having the kind of hooks to keep a specific type of player coming back.

I mean Getting Over It,Ikaruga, the Touhou series, AI War, all games I would put under masocore despite not being ‘splatformers’.

So it's Abzu/Flower meets The Witness? Meets Katamari Damacy. Meets Spore. Meets Viva Pianata. Meets No Man's Sky. Meets... Fez?

It really is everything.

@rox30:

>You know how there's an official Classical Period in music history? There's one for classic rock, too. It's just slightly less officially recognized because it's not hundreds of years old yet, so it has yet to enter "history". It spans from around 1960 to 1990, and one day it'll be in the history books, and music from that exact era will be the only thing that anybody will be allowed to refer to as "classic rock

1990? More like 1980. If you're going to make a separate "Classical Rock" period, it ends when Metallica starts. Seger, AC/DC, early Aerosmith, Creedance - classics. Everything post Metallica - Adult music.

@johnymyko: @danjhonson: I have no problems with Dan asking questions about things he doesn't know. Occasionally, it's even fun or interesting to hear people explain the answers, and I have even picked up tidbits or alternate analogies to use in my own life.

It's when it turns into incessant questions about things that either should be common sense (we don't milk pigs?) or things that even the person he's asking clearly doesn't know, because it doesn't actually matter (silicon vs silicone) that it starts to feel like listening to a young child asking "But why?" "But why?" "But why?" And it's not like he's usually asking stuff that's interesting - he's asking either basic life skills that MOST adults watching this already know, or he's asking simple trivia questions. At least when he was doing the Middle-Earth Quick Looks, he was asking questions that led to interesting answers, even if his tone was dismissive.

I've come to appreciate Dan, but this stuff does still very much get grating. A few questions while people are playing is fine, it gives me something to enjoy while they're playing. Distracting Vinny's setup of the video and explanation of the game makes me just want them to get on with it. He has 7 more hours at work with Vinny in which to ask some of these questions.

Totally not a game I have any interest in playing, but I think I can see why it would appeal to Dan, considering his love of Picross.

@danryckert: A suggestion I learned from playing a lot of bullet hells... If you start to feel the pressure, find a clear spot and pause long enough to take a sip of water. It will break your focus from the stress, and the physical action will keep your muscles from tightening, keeping you from accidentally hitting the wrong buttons.
