If you played through the game without dying, I presume you started each season with quite a few crash coins, yes?
Season 4 is significantly tougher if you go into it without any upgrades, just because the enemies in season 4 have really thick shields. Killing enemies with anything OTHER than the charged sword slash takes for-fucking-ever without any boost to your damage output. Also having spare cash for repairs and whatever.
Did you run into the mechs with the piercing charge beam? They resist the knockback of the charged slash and their melee bash is fast and deals 2 damage, while their beam pierces your shields and their aim can track you perfectly if you don't have any speed upgrades. Whether or not they appeared at all can make a big difference, I found.
