Top 25 All-Time Favorite Games

These games are my favorite games of all time. I rate them on the basis of the experience I had with them at the time. Most of them introduced me into something I had never experienced before: immersion into another world, adventure, philosophical ideas, etc.The descriptions are not all done yet, but some are there to explain my affection for each particular game.

List items

  • If you are unfamiliar with Mass Effect, all I can do is say it is Star Wars reborn and that it redefines the Sci-Fi genre. Look at the game’s cover; all it presents and promises comes to epic fruition.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the ultimate classic adventure and the closest a game has and ever will get to pure perfection.

  • The original vanilla game starstruck me. What really made the game shien was that it brought the Warcraft universe that I love so much to life. It was also the first time a young guy like me got to meet people from other countries and cultures. It claimed four year of my life before I managed to overcome my addiction.

  • I hated Wind Waker when I first saw the screenshots. To me the dark and mature Ocarina of Time experience had been reduced to a children’s cartoon. However, being a loyal fan I bought it anyway. To my deep surprise, it was anything but childish. The visuals had only gotten friendlier as well as more appealing; everything else was just as deep and mature as it had always been. It turned out to be a grand adventure across the seas, almost on par with Ocarina of Time.

  • When paired with all of its amazing expansions the experience is so fleshed out it actually almost overshadows the original game and comes close to taking its spot in the limelight.

  • Fantastic story, characters, gameplay, presentation and design - It is all fantastic. The game perfectly captures the feel of the Star Wars universe and makes you the hero of it. If you ever wanted to be a jedi or sith, here is your chance!

  • In the epic culmination of the Mass Effect series, face down the emissaries of doom, the Reapers. This is the strongest Mass Effect game gameplay-wise and has some amazing story moments, but it is unfortunately bogged down by bad plot resolutions.

  • I initially only glimpsed small fragments of Fable but I knew right away, that this was an amazing game. It was the first game I had ever played with choice, to do good or evil.

Instead of protecting the traders from bandits, I could join the bandits in their assault.

Do not miss out on this amazing fable of good and evil.

  • I never played the Baldur’s Gate games so my first true RPG experience was instead with Bioware’s successor game Neverwinter Nights. I shamefully admit that on my original playthrough, I never got past the final boss. I gave up, but I harbored no resentment for strange reason. I was already unquestioningly in love.

  • Perhaps the most immersive fantasy RPG experience ever created. I heartily recommend the expansion, Shivering Isles as well.

  • You are all alone on a yellow, grassy knoll, armed only with a worn-down AK assault rifle. A massive wilderness spans as far as your eyes can see and from a distance, you can hear the sinister howl of a mutant animal. If this situation sounds at all appealing, you have to play STALKER. The sense of immersion through the first person perspective and suspenseful atmosphere of the STALKER games are unrivaled. It will be love at first sight for you.

  • Although the original Starcraft is no pushover, I consider this the superior expression of the Starcraft experience.

  • An epic thrillride

  • Dark, gothic and wonderful

  • The thinking man’s shooter. It was the first game that made me realize that games could not only be wondrous journeys but also a vehicle for ideas and philosophy.

  • I was well aware of how just beloved Red Dead Redemption was, but I was holding out for it to come to the PC much as GTA 4 did. When I finally gave up two years later, I bought it for my Xbox 360 and the grand western adventure began.

  • Before Red Dead Redemption, this was the ultimate western game for me. Odd and brutal but always fun and challenging.

  • My first experience with Pokémon in game format. I wouldn't go anyware without my Gameboy after getting hooked on this game.

  • Though it does not provide with the same visceral pressure for survival like the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series, the Wasteland feels genuinely apocalyptic and depressing. Bethesda truly made me feel like the survivor of a nuclear war, scrounging for supplies and battling ghouls in the metro system.
