My favorite games of all time

I've been playing games since 1990, when I was 3; my Dad brought home an NES and that was when I was first introduced to games. . My list really doesn't have as many 'retro' games as you would guess, but the modern era of gaming has overtaken most of my desire to revisit older games. Also, my first games were Super Mario/Duck Hunt and Double Dragon on NES. My first gaming memories were playing Duck Hunt/Mario with my little brother sitting literally on top of the NES; Also, me and my Dad would play Double Dragon co-op for hours, I'll never forget the first time we beat the game.

  • I don't care if it's cheating to have this compilation as one entry, it's damn good. Half-Life 2 is still one of the best games I have ever played. While it might be hard for those who did not play HL2 in 2004 to understand what made it so ground breaking it can still be appreciated for its intriguing story full of mystery and emotion as well its solid gameplay. One thing in particular that I have always appreciated about this game is the cohesion between gameplay and story telling. The pacing and telling of the story plays to the strengths of video games as a medium. Games like Bioshock have also implemented the same story telling mechanics as Half-Life. I prefer this method much more because there is no divergence between the gameplay and story telling aspects.

Team Fortress 2 is a solid multi-player experience. With TF2's wide range of maps and gametypes just about anyone who likes good competitive shooters will appreciate this game. It is amazing that Team Fortress 2 can have nine classes and stay balanced; also, every class feels as though it has its own place and functions that contribute the team's overall goal.

  • I was always a Command and Conquer guy growing up, and still own every game in that series. I played Starcraft for the first time in 2005 and loved it, but never got into the multiplayer. However, Starcraft II has just about consumed all of my free time since its release. I have never felt the same satisfaction that this game gives from winning in any other game. It's also probably for the best that I don't know how much play time I have put into this game.

  • Halo CE blew me away the first time I played it. Myself and friends would stay up late on weekends blasting through the campaign on Legendary or 3 shotin' one another on LAN. Also, Halo CE has the best last level of any game I have ever played.

Halo 2 was a completely new experience for me. With the exception of Battlefield 2, I had not played games online extensively at all. I poured so many hours of my life into this game in high school. Many good times were had at the numerous LAN parties I threw.

Halo 3 is the best game in the series. The single player capitalized on wide open vistas that made Halo: CE's single player great while making meaningful improvements over Halo 2's multiplayer. The game can be played by just about anyone and can be played so many different ways that it feels like a new experience each time. There is room for the competitive as well as the casual with the wide range of maps and gamestypes. Saving films of yours and your friend's gameplay is a feature I now wish every game had.

  • Street Fighter is a game I grew up with. I have never really stopped playing it in some form. I have never been terribly good at the game. Despite this fact, I have an immense amount of fun when I get together with friends to play Street Fighter. Street Fighter II on Genesis was my first experience with an SF game and I love seeing this iteration of it capturing those memories so well while making the game feel fresh and relevant even now.

  • I played through the first Fable many, many times. This game improves so much over the first game that I still go back to it. I really enjoy the light hearted nature of this game. Also, the soundtrack compliments the environments in this better than most games I have played, with the exception of Oblivion.

  • The evolution of one of my favorite series. DICE continues to improve this series with each installment. This would have been Battlefield 2 if this game wasn't so damn good.
