new games? Why not old games

I have too litle time to play games.  as a result I have found myself in a place where all the games I'm playing are at least 1 year old.  One bonus is they're cheap.  And Borderlands I started when it was new...

I probably won't even be done with Dragon Age by the time the sequel comes out, and Fallout 3 GOTY in in my queue.  Can someone give me a giant vacation so I can do nothing but play video games and catch up  a little bit?

Stop playing long ass RPG's haha, take a little time for the short but sweet games (Splinter Cell: Conviction, Metro 2033, Alan Wake, etc.) and you'll get through more.

@Mawryk:  Awesome, same situation here! Since I started college i've had no time for games. Need a vacation too!
I'd started  Jade Empire before college, but it'll take me an year to complete that now. So I started BFBC2's SP campaign and playing MP as well. Gonna start with MoH when I'm done with that.

I constantly find myself combing through old games at stores. It's great! 20 bucks for RE5? I think I'll go through that one next.

I do this by choice, instead of it being a time constraint issue.  I mean, almost noone has enough time to complete all the games they are interested in, so everyone should have a list of cheap older games they could buy instead of the new shiny.

Except for good XBLA games -which I cannot resist-, I generally buy the "older" games. At this moment I am playing through fallout 3 and fable 2. It's not like the newer games are that much better or advanced, it's still the same console generation.

I do this all the time too! I'ts great to find something like three half a year old games for the price of one new title. I just bought Bioshock 2 for almost nothing at all and I'm considering to get Darksiders for dirt cheap also.

Since I have completionist tendencies, prefer expansive open-world RPGs ("life-stealers"), and have a 2-year old son, my backlog is quite long.  I agree, if you have a backlog like mine, buying older, cheaper games just makes good sense. Since gaming is such a mainstream media business now, you don't have to worry about finding out of print games like in the old days. If you can  resist the New Release shelf (helpful if you're not a big online player), you'll always find something in the $20 range you've wanted to play.

I finally finished Oblivion's main quest, but still haven't finshed all of the Factions or DLC.
Coming Up:
Fallout 3: GoY
GTA4
FFXII

Now that Blockbuster has merged its Online Movie and Game rentals, I should be able to get some shorter, linear games out of the way now.
God of War, Assassin's Creed, etc.

I totally need a vacation myself. Hell, just one day without any obligations would be awesome.

I would've said games like LIMBO, Red Dead Redemption, and Bayonetta but those games aren't bad either...

As Giant Bomb's other resident player of Old Games, I find the implication that playing games that are a year old is somehow bad to be kind of dumb. I play games that are at least 12 years old, and I still have time for the modern games that I care about. Just pick and choose the stuff that you would rather play.

Why not both?  But lately I've bought a ton of somewhat older titles, and my backlog is getting a little crazy.  But hey a big backlog is great for those times when you really want to play a game like X.

@LincoIn:  Great policy.  I always get burnt out playing huge games like Dragon Age, so I'll always pair it with some fast paced 8-10 hour action game. So now that I picked up Mirror's edge for $5, I'm ready to start playthrough #2 of Mass Effect 2 :)

You know, I always wait until things die down before I get to a sequel, and I still enjoy it every bit as much as everyone else does. You don't always have to get/start playing a game the day it comes out.

Well, I actually do mix in some shorter games between the longer ones.  They tend to be more indy titles like Braid, Trine, etc.  Also played Dark Void for a while since I scored a free PC copy from some Nvidia promotion.

I guess with the sheer volume of games pouring out nowadays, it's really easy to be a cheap gamer - interesting to see how many of us there are!
