GOTY 2015

Here are the games I've played from 2015. I've ranked them!

List items

  • I love the story, setting, and most of all the characters. It was so fun to live in the world of a teenager that could rewind time. I love that there's a smart gameplay mechanic that doesn't involve killing people and works so well with the story.

  • The effort in the environments is obvious and striking. Someone designed beautiful new art that looks old. I was blown away by a mosaic in an optional tomb! This game has some great set pieces and fun, varied combat to go along with them. I wasn't as impressed with the setting as the first game but it was still very well done and beautiful. There are many small things that make the world seem real: it's very dirty and broken and people seem to be living their lives (I stumbled on a funeral service after a large battle). It was a very pretty ride with some cool set pieces.

  • This game has a combination of great, funny characters in interesting situations. The actual interactivity of it is pretty light and there were times when I really wished I could be controlling the action. In the end, I still had a lot of fun and I'm sad to see it end.

  • Continuous falling mixed with a combo system makes this game a tense, rewarding experience. I just completed the game and my heart is still racing from that final boss.

  • I bought this game on the recommendation that it was "very metal". I agree, the imagery in this game is really dark and interesting. It's also a very precise platformer and combat experience. I loved exploring the levels and looking for secrets and upgrades. The bosses were wonderfully dark and menacing, with great patterns and attacks. The last boss and his three stages were incredibly difficult and a good culmination of dodging and predicting skills.

  • A really cool idea with some incredibly frustrating bugs. Methodically taking down enemies in the turn-based Mark of The Ninja style action feels awesome. Planning a daring escape only to have the jump path marker totally lie to you is terrible. I learned to live with Ronin's bugs and quirks and it ended up being a very rewarding experience where I could feel my skills develop over the course of the game.

  • Stasis has a great, disturbing atmosphere and great horror moments that are brought down by frustrating puzzles and cartoon villains with incredibly black and white morals.

  • Barely a game, but I still love the art, humor and some of the AI related sci-fi.

  • Cradle has interesting ideas but I think there's a little bit too much going on in the world for how bare-bones the story is. This choice of giving you a peek into the world but not an exhaustive explanation adds intrigue to the story (and to some extent is better than lots of clumsy exposition) but I didn't really feel satisfied.
