I just traded my system in at gamestop, they scanned the bar codes from the HDD and system.. so I'd assume if the bar code is still on the drive, you'd be good. I got $160 for my stuff..
I moved to a new city back in 2005. I didn't even bother unpacking my PS2, until late 2008. When I got it out and turned it on Final Fantasy X was in the drive with a whopping 15 minutes of playtime - so I finished that before grabbing persona 4 (due to the endurance runs)
I haven't played a next gen game that comes close to the satisfaction I got out of finishing FFX or P4. Long live the PS2!
I feel your pain. The first time I died I lost 2 hours of progress. That wasn't near as bad as the time I missed saving Rise because I misread the weather forecast and had to go back 2 weeks. I can't remember the last time I was so pissed at a game.
But -- I think having that chance of losing everything looming at every battle gives the game a certain amount of tension (charm), and I don't think they should change it.
The last time I went to Gamestop - I went in to get The Burning Crusade late on release day. The guy at the counter said that they had no more copies and because I didn't reserve it the only way to get it today would be to pre-order Red Alert. I said, screw that and headed for the door. Then, as by some miracle - a girl at the same counter says - ohh wait, we do have a copy right here.
