Top 10 Vector Graphics Arcade Games

Vector graphics is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and shapes or polygons—all of which are based on mathematical expressions—to represent images in computer graphics.

List items

  • Asteroids is an arcade space shooter released in November 1979 by Atari, Inc. Oh you could say that, but I'd say it was the iconic image for the arcade age. There were earlier arcades games, there were earlier vector games...but none had as much impacts as Asteroids.

  • Tempest was one of the first games to use Atari's Color-QuadraScan vector display technology. It was also the first game to allow the player to choose their starting level (a system Atari dubbed "SkillStep"). This feature increases the maximum starting level depending on the player's performance in the previous game, essentially allowing the player to continue. Just a fun game and very iconic to the arcade age. And, still relevant in that Jeff Mintner -the creator- keep trying to remake it!

  • The object of Star Castle is to destroy an enemy cannon which sits in the center of three concentric, rotating energy shield rings while avoiding or destroying 'mines' – enemies that spawn from the core, pass through the energy rings. It sort of a flip of Asteroids where the player is often centered at the start. A very fun tactical video game that came very early. Since early vector games were only B/W, this game used colored gel overlays to provide different colors on different fixed parts of the screen.

  • I think Star Wars and its sister Empire Strikes back are the pinnical of Atari's Color-QuadraScan vector graphics gaming. Colored vectors, movie-like sounds, and just the amount of objects rendered as vectros made it a wonder. But it just not a very deep game, it is just a very flashy game that gives you that feel of being a part of a thing you love.

  • This game should have more love! While the vector graphics based game was not as widely distributed as other games on this list various ASCII graphics and text based games based on the game principles exist. The arcade game is notable for having an interesting 'aircraft-like' throttle to control your thruster and for being one of the few arcarde games where a fuel supply and its conservation is important.

  • For its use of first-person pseudo 3D graphics combined with a "viewing goggle" that the player puts his face into, Battlezone could-be considered the first virtual reality arcade game. While an interesting and fun game it is not as tactically interesting as Asteroids, Tempest, Start Castle and even Space Wars. It is this high on the list simply because it is so iconic and beloved.

  • This is the granddaddy of vector graphics games. It fact, much like Tennis for Two (the great-grand-daddy) it started in academia not arcades. My guess is most people have never even played Space Wars. That is a shame since it is a fun and tactical space ship game that uses the idea of 'thrust and gravity' mechanic like Lunar Lander with the shooting and avoidance game play of Asteroids. It is the shoulders which both Asteroids and Lunar lander stand upon to be so tall.

  • My personal favorite game. Its is the father of the Star Wars arcades games. The player has a joystick with a fire button and a shield button. Enemy spacecraft come at the player who moves a retical and shoots the enemies or bounces then off with shields to get another crack at them. Score is based on shooting down and lot letting any fighter pass. Its a simple but fun games, I pumped a ot of quarters into Tail Gunner when I was on vacation of Martha's Vineyard.

  • Two armored knights face off, they can either do a side swing or an over head swing. This is a somewhat rare game that many might never had seen. Like many early vector games it used colored gels on the screen to provide color and additional graphical element to the play area. The overhead view of two humanoid characters was interesting, it was the earliest arcade fighting games....the Soul Blade of its day.

  • Tennis For Two was an electronic game developed in 1958 on a Donner Model 30 analog computer, which simulates a game of tennis or ping pong on an oscilloscope. Created by American physicist William Higinbotham for visitors at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, it is important in the history of video games as one of the first electronic games to use a graphical display. It stated video games and for that alone it deserves to be on this list. It doesn't sit at the bottom it anchors and provide a sturdy base of the games above it. Its may not look like much, but 'Tennis For Two' started this passion we all can now enjoy. It IS the Great Granddaddy of all video games
