Top Ten Games To Watch

I still hold the opinion that 2009 was an abysmal year for the video game industry. So what do we have coming up in 2010? Well we have a slew of sequels and original IPs that are coming out that are sure to make anyone's eyes sparkle. So what are my top ten games to look forward to in 2010, well as a pc gamer and a college student i become rather picky because of the limited money  have to spend on video games, especially considering a lot of money goes towards books, penciles, food, etc... So here are my top ten games to look forward to in 2010.

*I know this is basically a list, but just read and enjoy.

#10- Brink

Not much is known about this game, all i can say is that developer Splash Damage and publisher Bethesda clearly know what they are doing. With it's stylized and gritty art style and fast paced game play one has to wonder. Perhaps this is what Mirror's Edge should have been all along. Either way, for sheer brillance in art direction and kinetic fighting to rival the original F.E.A.R. this is a game to look forward to.

#9- R.U.S.E.

I love RTS games. Now I'm not thirty years old, so my first RTS, well the first one i ever sank time into was Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. And soon i ventured into oldies such as Warcraft where i learned to hone my tactical skills. No with some of RELIC's most recent RTS/RPG hybrids i've been a little disappointed, and I'm looking to R.U.S.E. to bring something new to the table, deception, while maintaining the old glory of RTS games that is large scale battles that aren't too overwhelming.

#8- Alan Wake/Crysis 2

Now you may be wondering why a pc gamer put Alan Wake on their list of top ten games to look forward to in 2010. (that's twenty-ten, no two thousand and ten). I am scratching my head a little as well, while REMEDY may not be fully transparent as to whether or not it's a 360 exclusive or not I still have hopes that they will release this amazing horror-adventure game on both platforms. With that said Crysis 2 also gets # 8 because, well, i found Crysis to be a one trick pony and Crysis 2 will replace Alan Wake if  Alan Wake indeed doesn't come out on the PC. Crysis 2, let's hope you bring more than just guns and pretty beaches to the firefight.

#7- Bioshock 2

Bioshock holds a very special place in my heart. It says philosophical intrigue all over it and yet managed to ruin the story in the last thirty minutes. With that mentioned, Bioshock will still be a hard game to follow up and I just hope that Bioshock 2 delivers. The Big Daddy looks impressive and Rapture is as art deco as ever, so here is a toast to a good singleplayer campaign from 2K and an abysmal multiplayer.

No Caption Provided

#6- RAGE

You know what games are mediocre but fun? ID games. You know what game is looking to break that spell? RAGE. This game has me excited on multiple levels, one is that it looks to finally be pushing that outdate engine used by ID and it has outside racing. Sure a lot of people told me Borderlands was like MAD MAX, however I beg to differ, RAGE is offering a story, a huge enviroment, and its built by a tried and proven developer, so look for this game, it will definitely be one to have.

No Caption Provided

#5- Mass Effect 2

 I don't remember a lot about Mass Effect. I played it one my 360, when I had one and for the most part it didn't seem very memorable. So why did i buy it on STEAM the other day for $5. Well other than the price being right all the hype and love surrounding Mass Effect 2, and my friends that love Mass Effect, have pushed me into giving this franchise another try, so here's to hoping it's a bit more memorable.

No Caption Provided

#4- Metro 2033

Let me tell you something, the Russian language is very hard to learn, but well worth it. STALKER games are hard to play, hard on your computer, but fun and rewarding. Cryostasis is the sleeper hit from the Eastern Block and I think Metro 2033 will be as well. It's set in an apocalyptic world and is a linear story. It's Half-Life 2, but more cynical, a bit more grotesque, and very RUSSIAN! All of these are reasons for me to want this game and why it gets to be #4.

#3- S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

The STALKER series is one of those games that is so flawed, so ugly, that you can't help but love it. Now while i've read CoP doesn't have the atmosphere of the first game, and is a lot less shorter than the second game, Call of Pripyat looks to stand on it's own merits has more of an expansion than anything else. If you have a pc that handled the other two games, or Crysis, I would say you owe it to yourself to play this game. To me it has some of the best story telling in the world and is just, well i get very giddy thinking about a new S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game.

No Caption Provided

#2- Battlefield: Bad Company 2

Do you remember Battlefield 2? I sure do. Remember the decent story from Battlefield: Bad Company, I do. Add these two together, publish it on every platform and you have a game worthy of the Battlefield franchise. Personally I hope this game dominates the multiplayer scene on the pc because Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is already old.

#1- Starcraft II

 I don't think i need to say anything.

Honorable Mentions (unsure of a 2010 release date):
Guild Wars 2
Diablo III
Half-Life 2: Episode 3
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

So tell me what games you all are looking for and i may update this blog with my impressions. Also, check my previous blogs i've made some updates.

All those games look good.  Personally looking foward to Alan Wake the most on that list.

I'd also add Mafia 2, Dead Space 2, Dead Rising 2, and Red Dead Redemption for my personal list.

I really wish I had a great PC because the eastern developed games seem so interesting and appeal to the sorts of fiction I love the most but they tend to always be very unoptimized and exceedingly demanding on a PC. I'm so glad HL2:E3 will come out and be playable on my PC but it may push me to finaly upgrade so I can run it on max max settings with 1080p res and 16xAA. I tend to upgrade my rig so that it can play every other Valve game I'm interested at max settings. The last time I updated was for Episode 1 so I'll most likely do it again for Episode 3 since DX11 cards should be out by then and I'll be able to hopefully snatch up a DX10 for cheap.

@Everyone

Thanks for posting. And yes feel free to add the games you're watching as well.  Also as one person said this is a pc games list. Mafia 2 is actually a game i'm watching, but in the end its not a game i'm going to put my money on right away. I know Heavy Rain looks awesome, but i don't have a ps3. Also, nintendo games,  while nintendo is making a lot of money off the Wii, most the people i know with one don't even play it that much, so if this list were to consist of all the platforms, then i would include maybe, maybe, one game.

@handlas:
Dead Space may have been on the list if that game had actually left an impression on me, i wasn't impressed.

@Mmmslash:
Also, Read Dead: Redemption, I would add, but western games aren't my thing.

@EVO:
While i do love myself a Pc Shooter, most of the games i played this year didn't leave an indelible mark on me, infact the only two games i'm going to really remember this year are Dragon Age: Origins, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, and yes Modern Warfare 2, but note that two of those games aren't shooters.

@The_Philosopher:
You'd be correct if it was GSC developing the game. Some people that worked on Shadow of Chernobyl went off and formed a new company to give a very linear experience. The issue a lot of people have with STALKER is it's lack of direction where as Metro 2033 sets to create a new apocalyptic atmosphere, with some new nuances and tricks, while sticking to the rails, a la Half-Life 2 type gameplay.

@02sfraser:
I'm not a fan of WoW.

@Scooper:
DX 11 cards are out, the ATI Radeon HD 5K series is DX 11. Also i would advocate rebuilding a pc now, with Core i7, then you can go ahead and run al the Eastern Block games, they really are diamonds in the rough, well they are still rough, but a great experience.

I hoping for some new better MMOs.

  1. Star Wars: The Old Republic.  I have high hopes this will drop during the forthcoming holiday season of this year.
  2. A.P.B. This could really change the way MMOs are normally handled.  I'd love to see how this works.
  3. The Secret World.  This was among my highest anticipated but delays and company financial issues make me wary now, but still interested
  4. Final Fantasy XIV.  I'd love to see what SOE has learned since FFXI and from WOW.
  5. Blade and Soul.  An action orientated MMORPG with a non-western fantasy setting This is more likely a 2011 release but I'm hoping for more info in 2010.

Guys, even though his Topic Title could have been better, he is talking about games that he's personally watching for in 2010.  There can really be no "right" Top 10 List in the first place, because we're all humans, not robots :p

Here's mine:

1. Super Street Fighter IV
2. BlazBlue: Continuum Shift
3. Final Fantasy XIII
4. Super Mario Galaxy 2
5. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
6. Metroid: Other M
7. God of War III
8. Bayonetta
9. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
10. Record of Agarest War

I'm not a huge fan of MMOs, or better worded, I'm not a fan of paying $15 a month on top of initial game purchase. Therefore i play Guild Wars...

Mass Effect 2 is 2010 GOTY, no doubt in my mind. All they need is to tweak some of the annoying stuff from ME1, and they have a winner - and judging from the videos, they have done that (classes, weapons, upgrades), only thing remaining to show is if the mediocre vehicle sections have been improved. ME1 is a late 2007 game and it's still the game I actively play the most, early in 2010, on my 6th playthrough, this time on the superior PC version.

Two additional thoughts - games like Alan Wake, Last Guardian, or Heavy Rain will never ever matter in terms of the console war, they are far too niche and lack any mass market appeal. Furthermore, Heavy Rain is looking more and more like a thought provoking, very different, but ultimately insanely boring QTE-fest, I have no doubt it's gonna be a critic's darling, but I seriously doubt it's gonna reach even a million units.

The second thought - a game on Xbox and PC is still Xbox-exclusive in terms of "the console debate". Precisely the reason why consoles are so popular is that people A) don't want to be fussed about the "anal pc stuff", and B) don't have powerful PCs to run them well. The whole "they're not exclusive" thing has been made up by console or xbox haters - they are xbox exclusive, they just aren't console exclusive, two very different things.

Surprised you don't have the Dawn of War 2 expansion on the list considering your status is "enjoying some Warhammer: Dawn of War II".  I know I can't wait to carve people up as Chaos in two months.

That looks like a PC gamers list :)  I'm looking forward to seven on it, four of them are games I'll get on PC

  • Metro 2033
  • Crysis 2
  • Stalker:CoP
  • Rage

I would happily add Alan Wake, but it seems the PC version will arrive some considerable time after the 360 game...

Nice list, I too am hoping BFBC2 delivers a BF2esque multiplayer experience. Although I was a huge fan of CoD4, MW2 completely lost me with it's console pandering ways; I have faith in DICE to not fuck this up.

@Teirdome:  I do enjoy some Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War II, however I am looking for a new RTS series to love as DoW II is really starting to bore me (still haven't beat the campaign, which for me usually means my interest has waned)

R.U.S.E. has been removed from this list. I played the beta on STEAM and wasn't impressed.

Also, i've bought five of the games on my Top 10 games to look forward to in2010.
