O Survival horror, Where Art Thou?

So I want to dedicate my first blog entry to the first game I really played from start to finish, and that maybe a hundred times (Ok, I'm exaggerating) : Resident Evil.

It was everything a twelve year old could dream of: awesome story (Umbrella was sooo f*cking evil!), great atmosphere, real zombies (not the running ones...) and the best intro ever...ok the intro was a shitty B-Movie, but I kinda liked it.

And it was also the beginning of my love for the sub-genre "survival horror“.  (Needless to say that I'm a fan of the Silent Hill series)

But now over ten years later, I have the feeling that there is not one real survival-horror game left.

Resident Evil became just another shooter with a few horror elements. Silent Hill gone more or less the same route.

Why?

Are we gamers really so in love with our action-heavy FPSs (don't get my wrong, I like them) that we won't play anything else anymore.

I certainly will spend my cash on a new survival horror game, if there will be one.

Or maybe I have to search somewhere else than the Resident Evil/Silent Hill franchises?

So if there is anybody out there, who cares to read my stupid little blog entry and knows about some games which would fit: TELL ME!  You will be my hero forever...:-)

I guess the trend we see with the decline of the survival horror elements in favour of action aspects has something to do with accessibility.

As a developer you want your game to sell millions and you want to broaden your fan base. A game where the ammo is scarce, the inventory limited and where you can only save a set amount of times and only in specific places (e.g. using typewrighters) is a tough sell for a casual gamer. With the popularity of cooperative games like Gears Of War and Left 4 Dead it is no wonder that Capcom took the easy route.

The only recent game I can think of that comes somewhat close to the old-school survival horror is Dead Space.
Knowing that you are a fan of creepy japanese girls with long hair you should also check out the Fatal Frame franchise ;)

Word, dude I hear ya. But before you give up, check out Fatal Frame aka Project Zero. You will pee your pants, I mean it has little girls in it, with long dark hair and... I'm already getting goosebumps. Edit: Damn, Loco, madmen think alike.

Ok I will check them out in my soon-to-come holidays (after my exams)!

And you're right Loco, gaming is now mainstream and so of course they want to sell as many copies as possible. So I guess we are now in the Blockbuster era of gaming... hope one day they will realize diversity in games can mean more profit for them, like Hollywood understood, when each of the big studios created it's own little "indie" division (Fox Searchlight, Warner Independent...). But perhaps game development costs are still to high for a full-blown game, especially in the HD era.

Hope this will change in the near future, because I'm not that keen on playing PS2 games on my HD screen...:-)
