General Format in Making a Review for Video Games

Making reviews has taken to different formats, from a written one. Everybody can make comments on review sites, but only a few can make proper reviews and critique the game. When planning to make a review for video games, you can just follow these guidelines or format in how you do it.

Don’t just play it, finish it

If you notice the reviews circulating the internet, you might notice a trend. Most of the reviews have a general grasp of the game, and they are published too quickly or too early. This rat race has led to a decline in the quality of reviews for video games. The huge problem is not just quality but the scope and depth of what’s talked about in the review. It all boils down to whether the reviewer finished the game or not. Most dish out a review even before finishing the game, without experiencing it a hundred percent. This creates a biased view of the game, as there might be big game play reveals as the game progress. A good and fair review is always done after finishing the game.

Summarize, but don’t spoil

Once you start writing the review after finishing the game, make sure you summarize the game. At the start of the review, make sure you have a rough breakdown of events in the game to have a proper flow with your readers or audience. The big challenge in making the summary is in avoiding spoilers. If the game takes around fifty hours to finish, it might be impossible to remember every detail that can spoil the game. Just be general when creating the summary to avoid any unintentional spoilers for your audience. Most of the people reading reviews haven’t played the video games you are talking about and are yet to make a decision to play.

Personally talk about what you like and dislike

The biggest problem with reviews is that they usually turn to an impersonal ad for the game. One of the best reviews doesn’t shy away from being frank or talking about what they dislike. As a reviewer, it would benefit you more to have a proper stand on your taste and preferences. The audience will respect a reviewer who openly says they don’t like mobile video games or web-based video games. The moment you praise a video game on a genre you don’t like, the more sincere and believable your review becomes.

Talk about themes and make comparisons

The biggest slam dunk in a review is that you should talk about themes tackled. If a shooter game talks about suicide or PTSD, then you should point out whether some aspects of the game also refer to this. Make comparisons on the video games you review and others. This helps create a perspective for the audience to gauge a game they haven’t played, creating an entry point where they find some level of familiarity.
