Metal Gear Solid: Approximately half way through

So I am around 5 hours in on the first Metal Gear Solid game, and from what I've heard about halfway through. So far I am really into it, and the game is pretty different from what I expected. First off the boss battles are amazing, psycho mantis, ninja, and vulcan, have all been very fun and challenging, I particularly enjoyed the ninja boss fight. The dynamic to every boss battle is interesting as well, each time I go in blind, not know what to use, and I haven't beat one in the first go around yet. Each one has taken me around 5 to 7 tries, getting slightly frustrated after each loss only makes me want to go at it a different way, and use a different strategy. The story so far has been very interesting, the isolated day in the life way of storytelling is extremely effective to me. The stealth gameplay was something I was a bit worried about, seeing as how I typically don't like these types of games, but here it feels very tactile, and to say the least I am getting the hang of it. Another thing that is great is having a reason to use all the gadgets they give you, and signifies really good game design.

Stay tuned I will hopefully finish the game soon!

Are you planning on playing all the games in the main series or just MGS1?

@thehexeditor: I am very forgiving when it comes to dated graphics and such, although some parts of it show their age, it implements things that are way beyond it's time.

That game is fantastic. The dialogue gets really cheesy though... It almost hurt the second time I went back and played it.

Really good game design? I wouldn't call all the obnoxious anachronisms in MGS to be really good. Y'know. Like how you have to backtrack all the way to the Armory so you can get a sniper rifle?  Or the part where everything is super clunky and occasionally punishing?

Nonetheless, despite the fact that *as a game* the original Metal Gear Solid hasn't aged especially well, from a story perspective it was and still is pretty groundbreaking. Personally, as a heathen who came to the series much later, I prefer The Twin Snakes for being somewhat more playable and far easier to look at. Yes yes. I know I am a bad person.

@FancySoapsMan: Yes I put like 2 hours into MGS 3 and decided I wanted to play the whole thing, I don't have a PS3 yet but I'll get to that once I beat MGS 3. And I plan on documenting it here.

@ArbitraryWater: I'll admit there are somethings that are pretty furstrating, however I think going back to get the sniper rifle kind of adds to the experience.

One of my favs. I'm happy your not playing the GameCube remake. They redid the voice acting and some of the music and did a terrible job at it.

MGS1 is still my favorite out of the series. The addition of the Patriots in MSG2 kinda ruined it for me. Regardless still a great series!

Make sure your chatting it up on your codec, there is some depth to the characters that you can get if you chat with them at the right time or if you have the right thing equipped. And some of the funniest moments in the MGS games are through codec calls.

Yeah, that part is a son of a bitch on anything. And that is the only game i remember disabling turbo controllers, and ocelot will give you a comment if you try to use one (i think newer turbo controllers will work). If you have not gotten past that part yet there is a trick with the ketchup so you don't have to go for another round of torture.

Ugh.  All this just makes me wonder how the series went so bad.  MGS1 was a masterpiece.  Seriously, MGS2 was hard to swallow then 3 and 4, fuck that, I am outta here.

MGS1 will always hold a place in my heart, but MGS2 was my favourite, i'm one of those people who didn't mind that raiden was in the game, snake was still very much there in spirit. MGS3 is a great mgs game, MGS4 was great at the time but i'm not so sure of its greatness anymore, i don't like the episodic structure but there's enough content of all sorts that it's hard not to like.

I'll probably never play the first game. When it finally came out on pc, I played the Metal gear 2, Combat Evolved ,and was confused that it was Raiden instead of master chief. Metal gear solid 2 and 4 explained about nothing to me and did it so beautifully and over the top, I'm actually going to play it (MGS4) again mabe after I'm done with Halo' reach. IDK, got Borderlands dlc.

You just can't beat Kojimas  knack for taking it all into the next demension. I have never seen cut scenes that so violated Time. Iv'e never seen a game where you could stop the action and consult your psychologist ,your best friend, the store, and if so inclined, some creepy little girl cam. Plus get wrapped up on some wierd backstory in the proccess. Please Octagon, please.. stop crying!

And to be short, still have some excellent game mechanics and such. Just blows me away.
