@notdavid: Well the character John Locke is named after the philosopher John Locke who had the thought experiment about the sock.

I'm not sure if it was patched or not since I haven't played with a low level character in forever, but if you are really desperate to beat him you can cheese this boss by throwing dung pies over the fog gate and poisoning him

For the non-incredible people here you can also get it on new game + where you already have good items to start with

From the official guide it says that they do disappear forever if they get away, but I'm not sure but the drops don't seem to be exclusive to the lizards, they are just the rare drops for other enemies, not absolutely sure about that part though. There are also new lizard like enemies that only appear when playing online.
