I guess it depends if you mean critically or commercially. They probably don't always tend to rate as high as older titles in a series that are 'true to their roots'. But commercially it must be a viable strategy. Didn't resident evil 6 sell some crazy amount? I'm a huge resident evil fan and I still haven't picked that up

Sure Darksiders II suffered from story and pacing issues but damn if it wasn't fun to play! This is really upsetting and a real shame. Like everyone said there was so much potential.

@Hailinel: @Apathylad: Sure, if this new DMC was hyped up for its story then its fair criticism if it doesn't deliver. However from what I've read a lot of the criticism against the game from fans is coming from the tonal shift and gameplay accessibility - not necessarily the story. I played DMC 1 and 3 at the time and I imagine the story wasn't considered the series' strongest selling point.

I haven't played this one yet so I don't want to make any serious judgement on the quality of the story, mechanics or anything else compared to the PS2 era titles. But the blasting the game has received from fans before and after the review has seemed kinda baseless.

I love it when politicians or government is the subject of an article - it really seems to bring the crazies out of the woodwork.

Critiquing the story of a hack and slash game? OK.

Yeah! Because the past DMCs had such meaningful characterisation and a rich universe and fiction...

How people form have these crazy convictions about games they won't even try (especially when its a genre they like!) is crazy to me. But to judge a game on the merits of its own accomplishments.. too commonsense (and yes I know.. the internet)

I grew up with SNES and N64 so yeah I still care about them. Since Skyward Sword though and how lackluster I personally found it I feel Nintendo has lost some of its "magic". Guess I'm just getting older.

I've just recently started feeling the same OP. I had a PS2 last gen and was fairly loyal to the brand. But when the X360 came along I was blown away by the idea of xbox live the system seemed really solid and really defined the early days of what online gaming on a console could be. Now however its strayed so far away from its roots its become just a jack-of-all trades machine. The subscription fee was totally reasonable in 2006, hell in 2010 it was "fine". But now.. its 2012 and we have paywalls behind paywalls, subscription fees that still include ads, and the 'privilage' to play the games you purchased online? Doesn't that sound crazy to anyone??

Are these also present in the 360 version? That's the version I'm getting and I really hope these issues aren't there as well.

I'm wondering the same thing. From what I've seen most of the problems specifically mention the PS3 version. Not to say there hasn't been mention of the problems shared between the two platforms but generally there is little or no mention about the 360. If you compare amazon customer reviews all of the discussion and reviews are under the PS3 version. 360 is virtually empty of discussion. Again not a great indicator but there still isn't a lot to go on.
