Dan in annoyed as hell mode = golden stuff. The way his demeanor and voice goes into overdrive during his tirades, you really feel his hatred for this obnoxious game.
Also, fuck this obnoxious game. Talk about trying 900% too hard.
The worst part of this whole thing is that there are now many multiple reviews and articles out there with a main theme of "maybe n64 era platformers were actually not that great and it's all just rose colored nostalgia" when that is absolutely not the case.
Hmm, or on the other hand, it is in fact very much the case.
Unfortunately I fear this might be true too - this whole "collect shit for the sake of it" is sleep-inducing watching the QL, and had it not been a new thing back in the day, we wouldn't think so fondly of it now. It's the classic nostalgia thing; you relish the memories and the collected experience, not so much the particular individual parts.
I think it becomes exponentially harder when you add that Z-axis. Not to take away what Shovel Knight accomplished, there are plenty of examples of even MODERN 2D games that managed to shit the bed (Mighty No. 9, anyone), but once you introduce camera controls into your throwback game, I can't imagine how much more complex EVERYTHING becomes.
Further exemplifying the genius that is Super Mario 64. Still the Original & Best.
EDIT having watched the Summerslam video; Dan is perfect for this shit! He may have found his true calling imo. Just the completely right mindset when interviewing these meatheads slyly trolling them at the same time (see the almost-crash zooms on Lesnar etc.)
