  • Probably the only game (series) that makes me want to read every Codex entry, Mass Effect 2 brings a more focused combat experience to the amazing Mass Effect universe.

The interactions in Mass Effect 2 are in full-force. Choice in how to deal with people through dialogue or sometimes with the paragon/renegade interruptions, you get some truly memorable events.

The whole story is built around just one mission. Through-out the game it is built up to no end, even the pre-release promotions were focused heavily on this one mission being good - I was worried about this tactic working for a game. I was wrong, watching the events of the mission unfold based on my choices was awesome. Even on a second play-through when I knew how to "game" the system.

This really should have been shorter, but I love it so. Oh, also, I should add the party members (named Mordin) are awesome.

  • The Western is very overlooked in games, and the Western games released prior to Red Dead Redemption never really sold people on the idea that a Western could work in games.

Red Dead Redemption managed to encapsulate what most people would want from a Western. An interesting story, interesting characters, duels, horse riding that doesn't suck, and feeling like quite the bad-arse in a gun fight.

  • Not being familiar with Fallout and Fallout 2, Bethesda's reboot of the franchise was new and exciting for me -- Obsidian have taken and improved upon Bethesda's framework. The characters and world Obsidian have created are where the main improvements are while keeping the I can play this anyway I want feel. Sure, the game is (was?) riddled with bugs, but I can look past them.

  • The Halo series is a decent gaming series, loved by me for its co-op, and Halo reach is the best of Halo to-date. That's pretty much all there is to it. Yup, it's the best version of Halo.

  • Mark and Execute brings the stealth genre from little more than trial and error to feeling like a bad-arse who can never be seen by puny humans eyes.

Also it has an extremely fun co-op campaign.

  • I can really get behind Metro 2033 for atmosphere alone, however I admire it most for its ambitions.

Metro 2033 has a bunch of little things, which, while not executed greatly, are very interesting ideas. Such as the clipboard acting as a traditional FPS HUD. Okay, sounds dumb, but it's interesting to me and helps to the survival horror feel to the game. I'm completely against bad controls to add tension, but Metro 2033 has good controls with poor weapons. Somehow it comes across as a less offensive way to add tension to the fights, though maybe that's just me.

  • The game kind of feels like a comic book telling of the apocalypse, not only that, but it borrows many gameplay elements from different games. That sounds like it could be dreadful, but Vigil Games managed to mesh everything together very well. It feels like its own thing, even when you're thinking "Hey, that's like the Legend of Zelda." that's not the only enjoyment I take from it, it still has it's own tone and feel.

  • No longer getting to know rapture, I wondered how BioShock 2 would fare. I felt that mechanically BioShock 2's dual wielding was much easier to get behind than it's predecessor single weapon style, but other than that, nothing. Story-wise it seemed very disconnected from the world already established, they removed my favourite weapon (crossbow with trap ammo), and yet I still enjoyed it.

  • I was a big fan of the (crazy) characters from Bad Company, and was hugely disappointed with how toned-down they appeared to be -- well maybe not toned-down, but there is much less a focus on them to try and emulate a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare-like experience. Still, there is an undoubted fondness for those crazy guys.

  • I thought it was going to be Civilisation V, Football Manager 2011, Just Cause 2, or maybe Puzzle Quest 2 that would knock Black Ops (zombie mode) out of 10th. But on a whim, and a steam sale, I picked up Super Meat Boy - the perfect game for playing while listening to podcasts. I just hope it doesn't get too hard that I can no longer do that.
