Did You Ever Notice: The First Shot in GTA IV?

Did you ever notice that the first shot in GTA IV with the guy in a bondage suit screaming "Daddy's back you bitches!" is supposed to be a reference to the Hot Coffee mod of GTA: SA? It's not exactly the same, but the fact that it's a hardcore act and that it's literally the first shot in the whole game is meant to represent the fact that this was GTA's past. When Niko knocks on his door and tells him he's going to miss his chance to go ashore it's referencing the fact that GTA is leaving that kind of silly 'dildo as a weapon' stuff and will be going for a more serious story. It's also saying that it's leaving behind the Hot Coffee stuff for this game, which is funny that Rockstar acknowledges it even though it wasn't actually in GTA:SA, or wasn't meant to be.

In addition to that, the phrase, "Daddy's back you bitches!" is meant that after its leave of absence for four years and dozens of competitors trying to take its place, the real sandbox crime game is back to take its rightful place on the throne. It's meant to be GTA actually saying to the competitors that they're bitches and that daddy, the game they all took their ideas from, is back. Thought I'd just point that out for anyone who didn't notice it before. Hope you enjoyed it.

That's an interesting interpretation. Though, I'm kind of shocked someone would put so much consideration into such a brief, creepy and uncomfortable scene. You make interesting points, though. That could very well be exactly what Rockstar was thinking when they included it.

I was disappointed that that level of sexuality was not sustained throughout the entire game.

Yeah I don't really sit down and think of it, but I have studied a bit in film and have read a few scholarly books about how to interpret shots and stuff, so I just kinda notice this miniscule crap that people think is weird. I find it interesting delving into someone else's vision, and I think it's stupid when people say I shouldn't waste my time interpreting video games. They have just as much thought in them as anything else, the only difference is not many people really read into them like this yet.

It all makes sense now. On another note: You can still find purple dildos in some of the trashcans.

Hmm, I don't think they've abandoned this train of thought, they're just doing it differently. I mean, you've got stuff like Pisswasser and you do a mission in a porn store.

I'm not sure how you got Hot Coffee just from "Daddies back you bitches!"

Besides, they reference when you're trying to get in Michele's pants.

"Want to come in some for warm coffee?"
"Sure but if this winds up on the internet I'm going to kill you"

or something like that, it's been awhile since I've played GTA4.

In which you shoot a pornographer in the knee.  That could just as easily be used to support the OP's interpretation.

I picked up on the "announcing GTA's return to its competitors' thing. It's just too bad that with the singular exception of story quality, GTA IV wasn't as good as Saints Row 2, or even GTA: San Andreas.

That's a great observation. You might be reading into a bit too much but I like your theory and would like to think that your right.

I'm sure this thread will get bombarded with dumbass comments saying "GTA IV WAS SO BORING! IT SUCKS!"

I've been off this site for a while and just noticed the 25 messages or so in my mailbox. Whoever dug this thread up from out of the abyss thank you, and I'm glad that it's sparking the kind of discussions that I originally wrote it for. Now that I know some people are interested, I'll post some more observations as I notice them.

Cheers guys

I think this is actualy a pretty decent observation.  I personaly love the more mature and involving route that GTA4 took, i guess that's reflected in the writing, even the bondage sex-scene writing.  If you look at that whole opening scene on the boat it actualy pretty much preludes everything in some way.  The diamonds getting smuggled in on the boat leads to the diamond excahange at the centre of the game (and the expansions), this is even accentuated by the music.  The themes of the american dream and expectations of LC are setup through the dialogue, as is Niko's history, motives and some of his character.  Roman is introduced, he has forgotten serbian implying that he is heavily influenced by american culture and he is immediatley portrayed as foolish and slightly drunk.  His "i've made it" talk is starkly contrasted with brown bag drinking and his shitty car.  The more I think about it the more it's a masterful opening.

Sorry, got a bit carried away there.

You definitely didn't get carried away there, and I love your observations. This kind of discussion is what a community of like-minded, mature video game fans should be having. The fact that you apologized for writing a post that isn't a chain of insults between Doug Funny and Roger Klotz reminds me why I left this site in the first place. We can only hope that people become more accepting of a mature take on video game analysis as the years go on, but don't apologize for being one of the few who expressed himself sooner rather than later.

there is a definite reference to Hot Coffee with the acheivement Warm Coffee
When you ask michelle to go inside she says "yeah, for twenty million dollars" referring to the money R* had to pay for the Hot Coffee incident
(notice i used the word Coffee about 4 times lol)

Be that as it may, there are still piles of rubble with dildos in them ,not counting the "Experience C*unts' sign Honkers and The Triangle Club. Never has a missing O made me blink that quick! :-)
