Yea Canadians have been getting bent over by our telecom companies for years. This CRTC decision means they now have free reign to reach around and punch us in the balls, too.
@ryanwho: If you're gonna try and present yourself as an authority on what is or isn't film noir then you should at least make sure you're spelling it correctly.
It's good that somebody filed this appeal, but even if it's approved, given the disparity of resources between the two sides of this issue I would be surprised if anything actually happened.
" This thread was posted yesterday, and again -- Shaw and Rogers have already been doing this so what is the big difference -- that smaller ISPs that lease from them can do it too? We've got caps of between 30-175 gigs based on payment plays and they charge $1-$2 per gig over those caps (again based on payment plan). Now if they were to change our plans with little warning to much smaller caps, I'd be pretty ticked, but checking out Shaw's site and looking at my bill, I haven't seen any changes or word of a change so..... yeah..... People are getting up in arms a bit late over this, no? Where were ya when the big companies decided to do this? D: To the time machine! "
The problem isn't that smaller ISPs can do it, which they always could. The problem is that this ruling allows Bell, who the smaller ISPs lease the network from, can now force the independent guys to have caps and overages. Meaning Rogers and Bell now have more room to lower their caps, which is exactly what's happening.
@ahriman22: If you live in Ontario, your cap should be getting lowered to 60GB, and Bell has submitted a request to the CRTC to allow them to lower caps to 25GB which I can almost assure you will be approved.
I don't know if you guys read this article in the Globe and Mail today http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/opinion/a-metered-internet-is-a-regulatory-failure/article1881250/
Basically the CRTC recently allowed Canadian ISPs to start charging us on a per-GB basis, with the charges likely being in the insane range of $1.00-$2.00 per GB with a small "free" allowance like 25GB. If you like using Steam, or Netflix, or bittorrent etc. you will be getting raped on your internet bill.
At the bottom of the article is a link to petition you can sign to try and fix this. Now we all know that the CRTC is a joke and there's no way they'll reverse this decision, but it will at least make you feel better.
Also, just wondering, will this decision impact how much you use Steam or any other service like it, or will you just eat the extra charges?
@cnlmullen: There's a big difference between eating at a Cuban restaurant in the States and eating like a Cuban living in Cuba. Trust me, you do not want to eat like a Cuban.
