@cabbagesensei: You are absolutely correct. However, this position isn't just "Hey come write about video games". This site thrives on video content, and more specifically, video content of a humorous nature. Very, very few sites out there do the kind of videos that Giant Bomb does. That's what helps them stand out. For anyone (and not that you are saying this) to say Dan isn't perfect for that role may be misunderstanding the position that was open. Giant Bomb, in my eyes, is becoming less and less "Traditional Journalism" oriented, so while tons of capable, talented writers (such as my pick Cara) applied, the spot that was open wasn't necessarily a "writing" job
I was excited when Dan and Jason were announced. Never even though about race/gender etc. If it were Cara Ellison, I would have been just as excited. But, according to some, this makes me part of the problem, and anything I type here will be met with an eyeroll or a "go fuck yourself," so I'll just keep to myself and continue to enjoy the content Giant Bomb puts out.
I dont't think youre part of the problem at all....it's good to be excited about anyone coming in to GB. Dan and Jason are great, Cara would be just as great. Also, Ultramantis Black rules
I think the best thing we can all do is to really think about what we say here, or on Twitter or Facebook or Reddit or whatever...words, no matter how intentional or not, can be a incredibly dangerous weapon. I do my best to never say anything in anger, which tends to keep me from commenting a lot on the internet. Im not perfect, but the older I get, the more I believe in treating others, even those I vehemently disagree with, with respect.
We are still in a era of growing pains when it comes to social media. Its weird to think about my soon-to-be children growing up in a time where Facebook and Reddit and Twitter were always there. Hopefully by that time we'll get our shit figured out, we will be able to communicate and share thoughts and ideas without senseless arguments and toxicity. And to get there, we all gotta do our part. What I'm asking is for all of us to just think before we tweet, or post a thought or a response. Think about what you are saying. Think about how others might perceive it. Think about what your response adds to the conversation. Its real easy to just spout off your two cents and be flippant and sarcastic. But that, as we have seen, doesn't help...it just creates more venom, more hate, more anger....and, more specifically to these past few days, it drags a lot of real good people through the mud.
Censorship and silencing voices is not the answer, we all should be allowed to discuss any topic, controversial or not. But we should also do so with a sense of personal responsibility. This is our community, the staff are our Duders, and this is our dumb video game corner of the internet. Let's have some pride in it, let's act in a way that encourages new voices to be heard, to come enjoy the silliness that this site represents. And let's get back to having fun...cause that's what video games are supposed to be, right?
