@shiftygism: I do believe Fire Pro Returns is on the PS4 now for like ten bucks as a PS2 Classic.

An unexpected pull for them but the right choice :)

Edit: Damn, it's only PS3. My bad... Still though!

I've always really liked Jeff Bakalar but hearing his go-to wrestler was friggin' Raven just really puts him on a new level for me.

Rescue this man from cnet and get him on the staff full time asap!

So do battles ever get more complex or interesting?

The only FE I ever tried was the GameCube one but got super turned off by the combat and bailed out early on.

I've always meant to give it another try, since wtf did I know back then, and this seemed like a good one to pick up! I've been hearing all sorts of positive changes to the standard FE formula that make it seem more my style.

But just watching this quick look... I'm already tuned out half way through and making a rambling post instead -_-

I love SRPGs! Everything from XCOM to Super Robot Wars. I even dig table top war games ala the 40K and what have you. But Fire Emblem just seems so insidiously simplistic. Positional awareness and a basic attack. That's it, ignoring a handful of special healing and magic users. But over all it's pick a place to stand that won't get you murdered and hit the attack button. Or don't. Even the weapon triangle is kind of over simplified, I find it makes everyone feel samey since there's no meaningful distinctions between characters out side of rock paper or scissors.

Even the famed difficulty seems more like a side effect of the lack of player options. My take away wasn't a fun challenge but rather a lack of player agency. You make the "right" choice or get blown up.

What am I missing? Permadeath is really cool in a personality driven game but beyond that... Is it really just the characters and story that's the main draw? Does the gameplay ever open up beyond what they show here?

@sluggdiddy: I'd endorse this as a pretty solid description. Best I've seen so far at least.

A game that overcomes it's flaws, doesn't have the marketing, budget or mindshare to be a AAA blockbuster, yet is also, and I think this is an important distinction, isn't outright bad.

B-movies can be terrible. A B-game is different. If it's just bad entirely it's not a B-game, it needs to be worth playing for some reason. Any reason. They're just not as disposable as a B-movie, probably thanks to the time investment.

A B is still a maybe, a "You might dig it if..." Below a certain threshold however just exists failures. I don't think a B-game can also be an abject failure.

My main take away from this is that I'd probably pay $40 for a Switch version of Ultra Street Fighter 4. Maybe $20 at this point. But not for SF2. This is a silly thing.

I wonder if Brad and Ben will ever do anything real with Dota. The nonsense they did on UPF the other day was funny but I'd be curious to see them play an actual match sometime.

I'm so mad. Wrote a big long thing about supers and meter management in NRS games then the browser ate it.

Short version: Supers in Netherrealm games are new player friendly eye candy; like the auto-combos in KoF14 or the new Marvel. Simple, flashy but an inefficient use of resources + low damage. They're not for serious play so once the honey moon phase is over you'll never really see them very often. Best of both worlds. Something cool you can see day one but don't get in the way once you start really learning the game.

As to the Cake/Bread thing;

Don't get hung up on whether the word cake or bread is in the name of the item. That's just semantics. You can name anything anything. If I name my Cat "Turtle" that doesn't make him a reptile.

Case in point; Sweet Breads. Definitely not bread.

I think you all got it right with the dough vs batter thing. Breads are made from dough and cakes are made with batter. Cooking is all chemistry. The item is defined by how you make it.

But with all things humans are just obsessed with labels. Names are just commonly accepted associated noises we make to easily communicate with one another. What you call a thing doesn't change what the thing is.
