@humanity: The DLC for both this and the first game does get pretty creative with the setting. The Surge had a theme park with murderous robotic mascots and also had a western themed challenge mode thing. The Surge 2 gets a suburban aircraft carrier overrun by robo-pirates which is definitely not something I've seen before.

Valtr is a cop. He is pretty badass though if you read the description of his outfit (Constable set). If you crush enough vermin, he appears without his hat when summoned.

"Once upon a time a troupe of foreign constables chased a beast all the way to Yharnam, and this is what they wore.

The constables became victims of the beast, except for one survivor, who in turn devoured the creature whole, all by himself.

The fable is a favorite among Yharnamites, who are partial to any stories of pompous, intolerant foreigners, who suffer for their ignorance. It makes the blood taste that much sweeter."

If you crush enough vermin, he appears without his hat when summoned.

It looked like Jan wasn't being aggressive enough during the third phase. There were several opportunities there where he was backing off instead of hitting her while she recovers after an attack. Bloodborne expects you to trade blows with bosses on occasion especially when using some of the heavy two-handed weapons.

Jan was also asking about bosses in Sekiro in the last video. I haven't played that game but Dark Souls 3 definitely has some bosses that are very similar to the ones in Bloodborne. The DLC for Dark Souls 1 also has a bit of a Bloodborne feel to it. Artorias in particular has some very similar moves to Maria. Although not a From game, The Surge 2 has bosses that demand parrying and plays at a pace that is somewhere between Dark Souls and Bloodborne.

There is a much better npc that can be summoned for the Ludwig fight. I think he only shows up if you have a certain rune equipped.

Also, the whirligig saw's L2 attack is different when you hold the button down. The blade keeps spinning and you are still free to walk around.

The blood river is worth exploring. There's an old friend you can meet there.

The thing that all those "babies" were staring at is the clock tower and what's in there is DLC.

Also of note is that Ebrietas and Rom do not turn hostile until attacked.

Bloodborne and all the Souls games are full of secrets that are very easy to miss without a walk through. This is because these games are meant to be played online with everyone leaving short cryptic messages everywhere. There is co-op but no chat functions of any sorts. The player is never meant to have a complete picture of what is happening which creates a sense of mystery that most modern games are missing. It is one of the most appealing things about these games and what all imitators seem to miss.

Having to farm blood vials in Bloodborne is not fun though. I'm playing through The Surge 2 right now and while that game is nowhere near as good as Bloodborne, it does at least two things better. You hit enemies to build up energy which is then used to charge healing items or for finishing moves. You are never really out of healing items in that game which means no grinding and you can keep exploring deeper. The other thing is that whenever you get a new weapon, it is already upgraded to a level appropriate for where you found it.

Few more things of note:

  • Gestures menu is on the other side of the touchpad or you can try motion controls (hold X and move the controller)
  • If you get grabbed by an enemy, try mashing r1 and l1 to escape faster and take less damage
  • Going to Cainhurst will allow you to progress Alfred's/Albert's/Allen's quest. The conclusion to his quest is quite something.
  • Yes, the DLC is difficult in relation to how early it opens up but it is worth playing if you like the game so far. It has some of the best boss fights in the entire game. It also has weapons like the Whirligig Saw and the Boom Hammer (exactly what it sound like).
  • The centipede flower enemy at Byrgenworth is a Chalice Dungeon enemy and is there to imply that the dungeons are underneath the university.
  • Bloodborne (and the Souls games to a certain extent) have a thing for eyes
    • The Witches of Hemwick were covered in eyes
    • The mob version of the witches grab you and gouge an eye out with a dagger. They also always drop pebbles when killed
    • Take a good look at the pebbles, they sure look like eyeballs
    • The jars in Byrgenworth are full of eyes
    • The NPC hunter at Byrgenworth was wearing a cap that covered her eyes
    • The man performing the blood transfusion at the beginning of the game had bandages over his eyes
    • Father Gascoigne was wearing a blindfold
    • The weird guy at the chapel is blind
    • Rom had too many eyes for a spider and was keeping certain things hidden from view.
    • With high enough insight you can see that the enemies patrolling Cathedral Ward carry lanterns that are covered with eyes

A few things of note:

  • Killing Rom will cause the game to progress to a new world state
  • You can still keep damaging Rom while she is teleporting
  • Some enemies are classified as beasts and some are kin. Beasts are weak to fire and serrated weapons while kin are weak to bolt and thrusting attacks.
  • Insight affects your resistance to frenzy. The more you understand, the closer you are to madness.

Some of the enemies you've encountered this time have pretty interesting names

  • The bug-like creatures are called "Garden of Eyes"
  • The frenzy inducing singing brains are "Winter Lanterns." You can only hear them sing if you have enough insight. They cause frenzy when they can see you. Note that they also wear the Doll's dress.
  • The big boulder tossing yeti is a "Lost Child"

Other things of note:

  • If you were playing online, you'd be getting invaded in the Nightmare Frontier. Playing online causes a bell ringing woman to spawn in that area with the two NPC hunters. The game displays a message when a bell ringing woman is present to let you know that you are open to invasions.
  • NPC hunters will perform a gesture when the kill you. That axe wielding hunter bowed when you died.
  • Try performing a gesture in front of the Doll
  • There are three possible endings to this game. To get the best ending requires at least 3 certain items. You'll know what they are when you find them. It is possible to miss some of them.
  • There is unfinished business in previous areas.
    • Go back to Cathedral Ward and talk to the prostitute and the cranky old man.
    • There is a somewhat hidden cave in Forbidden Woods that leads to something very interesting as well as an item that unlocks a pretty cool optional area.
  • Valtr (the guy with a bucket on his head) is awesome. The description for his outfit (it is obtained in the DLC) is amazing.

I don't know why people are arguing here about the USSR since I don't remember any of the old Metro games glorifying it. Metro's Communist faction were the primary antagonists in Last Light. These games are actually very critical of all the ideologies of the past that people still cling to in a world those same ideologies destroyed.

Is it the hat in the thumbnail that started this? You have to look at it in context. Melnik (why did they translate his name to English?) is an old broken man in a broken world. He was a soldier all his life. Military is all he knows. The hat is perhaps something that brings his mind back to a time when he was young and strong badass in the Red Army which gave purpose to his life. Young people are idealistic and hopeful so we feel nostalgic for things from the past as we get older and lose that spark.

As for the game, this definitely looks like my cup of tea. Getting a very strong STALKER vibe here. Mutants sometimes ran away when you killed enough of them in that game so seeing human enemies surrender here is a pretty nice touch. More games should have that. I always find it amusing to see a lowly henchman continue to try to kill the protagonist after seeing a dozen of his buddies killed right before his very eyes.

Will probably wait for this to come to Steam since I don't think my current PC will run it well anyway. Might get this on a console if I see a good deal since Eastern European games tend to be pretty buggy on consoles compered to PC in my experience.
