One of the Amiga games they played last week on UPF, Cannon Fodder, is really good. You would what is basically a mouse driven top down shooter would be clunky, but it actually plays very well. You can get it on GOG for $5.
I agree with @samael2138. If you can, get a teacher either locally or online. That should really help you make solid progress at a steady pace. I'm pretty much self-taught and I've been playing off and on for years, but I'm still not a great player or anything. I know a lot could be improved and I'll try to get some lessons one day. Having no one to guide you or bounce things off of requires a lot more personal dedication and work in order to properly improve your ability at a consistent pace.
Guitar Rig 5 is a good program. It has a built in metronome, tuner, and what not. I think a lot of the presets are pretty good, especially if you customize them to your taste. If you should ever want a better computer interface, check out Focusrite's Scarlett interfaces. I bought one recently and really like it.
I use a Focusrite Scarlett interface myself, and it's really good. Hard to beat for the price and quality
I can also vouch for the Scarlett and Guitar Rig.
Make sure you use a metronome. It really, really, really helps in a way most players (including me) don't realize or appreciate until they have bad habits.
I do research with them. They're pretty awesome, but battery life is a big limiting factor (at least for the multirotor ones that are most popular with hobbyists).
