Why Battlefield 3 could be the shooter I'm waiting for.

  An Evolution
  An Evolution

Why Battlefield 3 is important

When Call of Duty 4 hit shelves it reshaped the FPS genre. While it wasn't anything revolutionary it was certainly an evolution. For me Activision has since run Call of Duty into the ground releasing regular sequels which don't even try to progress the genre as a whole. As far as I am concerned a relaunch of the brand wouldn't be a terrible thing. This brings me onto the Battlefield series. Bad Company was a great game and brought the Battlefield franchise to consoles despite criticism of the decision. Bad Company 2 was a great follow up but did make me worry that it would follow the same path as Call of Duty. However, the use of a sub title has allowed Dice to experiment with their technology and ideas. All this time Battlefield 3 has been slowly worked at and it seems like Dice are really trying to do everything they can to make the best game possible. I think this is all that is needed in the genre, for a developer to really think about how they can improve it. Hopefully the release will inject new life into a genre which is slowly being destroyed by unimaginative sequels.

 Could this change the genre
 Could this change the genre

This is in no way a Battlefield fan boy rant to be honest I have never really got into the franchise but I am really excited from the little that has been shown.

What do you guys think? Is the genre going stale? Does Battlefield 3 have the chance to change things?

While it may not change the genre, as CoD has now hit "mainstream" like a nuclear bomb and holds it firmly in it's grasp, I still have great hopes of it being a fantastic game. I trust DICE completely. And if nothing else, it may make people realize that games designed for PC will be a thousand times more impressive than what consoles can achieve, and I say this as someone who doesn't even own a gaming rig (yet)

I don't trust DICE to make the game anyone expects (which could be good or bad), but Im sure it'll be great fun. And as someone who wants to play call of duty games as they are right now for the next 5 years, I don't think the genre's going stale.

The most radical thing they could do is make the exact game all the hardcore PC fans want.

Um, yeah, i dont appreciate your "im looking at Battlefield just now because im done with Call of Duty" approach..
Battlefield has been around since before CoD and it established itself as the greatest multiplayer shooter franchise. it's not the 'new hope' for the genre, it's one of the godfathers of the genre and has been around forever, kicking ass and capping flags.

I'm glad that we now have you in our troops, however your rather 'shallow' reasons are unpleasant to read

I don't know if it's fair to call the FPS genre as a whole stale - there's a decent amount of variety around and imminent if you want it.  The CoD4 formula is feeling well worn out though.  I hope they try something a little more ambitious and dynamic with the BF3 campaign, and not just another guided tour down the war funnel.

Battlefield excites me not only because it has the potential to be a great game on its own, but if it comes out and it's great, it will give the Call of Duty series some real competition. Maybe with competition will come some innovation in the CoD series instead of rehash after rehash.

I trust Dice to make a game that runs beautifully (on a triple or quad core computer with a graphics card for gaming, with some details cut down - be realistic here), sounds great and looks amazing, but gets ignored in the GOTY awards because Activision took a wet shit.

With Dice, you know that the PS3 and PC versions will work, and that patch-notes and fixes for the PC version won't be complete lies, I can still reroll all kinds of packages and teleport around corners with the knife in PC Blops, but Dice fixes things.

Throw a punch for the future of gaming no matter your platform, throw a punch for the good of the game industry - this fall, buy Battlefield 3. Let Activision run CoD into the ground on their own.

Think they're holding their scheduled GDC unveil then. Can only assume they'll be showing multiplayer... or they'll just roll out the full singleplayer demo they did for Gameinformer... Which I hope they don't. I want to see multiplayer!

By the way! They really need to give the Battlefield theme more love! Hell even the MEC embraced it!

Actually, there has been some tweets about MP being shown 'very very soon'. EA's hosting a preview event, which will be focused on BF3. Very likely the attending gaming press and other developers will be able to play BF3 MP and write about it.

My guess is a 10+ min video of the singleplayer stuff, we've already read about and hands-on previews on MP (maybe even some footage or a MP trailer).

That list is just their developers contributions to the GDC panels. GDC is meant to be a place for devs to exchange know-how and such - I believe. And get their booze on at nights.

The singleplayer is pretty much what I expected from when Gameinformer posted their article. Would be dumb on DICE's behalf to not continue to publish information around that.

But I hope you're right about the multiplayer. Been looking forward to GDC ever since they mentioned unveiling there. But my interest is solely around multiplayer so.

I've managed to pretty much stay away from modern military games. The only ones I've played are Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call Of Duty: Black Ops (single player only, and the modern part is questionable), and the one-off Army Of Two games.

Beyond that, I'm coming in with a bit of fresh perspective, I guess you could say. I'll probably get Battlefield 3, depending on when it releases.

I bet the luchadors of GiantBomb will be there as per usual. Don't know if they'll catch EA's preview event or attend Frostbite 2 talks - but GB definitely will be a source of information on everything GDC.

GDC is happening in San Fran and there will be booze and fingerfoods. No way Jeff & Company won't hit that!

Almost every US based gaming site is based in SF too, so yeah - there will be coverage. Pretty sure that BF3 will have the biggest marketing budget this year out of all of EA's portfolio, that preview event might be rather big and fancy.

Apologies to the OP for this effectively derailing into a Battlefield Theme thread.  As for your question, the core Battlefield series has always brought something new.  If anything about the genre has gotten stale, it's the CoD series itself (and those that try to emulate it).

If they put a lot of time on the PS3 hardware specifically, that's not impossible. On the other hand, it might just be about how they've put so much extra focus on the PS3 hardware to be sure it runs just as smoothly as the PC and 360 versions since those two versions have the same work- and optimization process.

DICE got some catch-up to do. BF:BC 2 is quite unstable and the least pretty version of BF:BC2 (Mind you - it's the version I'm playing on, because I prefer the Dualshock 3's analogstick deadzones and prefer playing BF with a gamepad).

Certainly great to see DICE further optimizing for PS3, but since this time around it's gonna be a much more significant difference between PC and consoles, I can't help it and will have to play BF3 on PC. Might pick up the PS3 version too, depending on my beta impressions. Definitely will be a quite different feeling game than the PC version.

Would be great, if they'll show off all 3 versions tomorrow, but I doubt it.

I haven't had any issues with BC2 (PC) since they ironed out the major issues.  It's not perfect, but my problems with it are more design flaws than technical issues (partly from it being a console port).

As for where to play BF3, definitely play it on PC; that's were Battlefield belongs.  Plus they're (supposedly) giving the PC version extra attention.  And from everything they've said so far, it should be the superior version anyway.

As a Battlefield player it is clear that DICE have not taken any advice from Activision on how to produce sequels (Thank god). Im not a battlefield 'fanboy' and I did enjoy COD but the past 4 games have been the same with only a slight variation of perks and different guns. The game as a whole has not changed a great deal. For me black ops was real let down this year with modern warfare 2 seeming far more superior. It seemed like Infinity Ward really tried to create the same effect that COD4 had on players by giving it a massive update. Although the gametypes remained the same, the changes made through perks, maps, engine and customization were a real improvement but Treyarch just seemed to have discontinued these upgrades with black ops making it more comparable to COD4 and not an improvement on Modern warefare 2.

The difference with DICE is that they had huge success with battlefield 2 and did not want to make small alterations and release similar games keeping the same titles hence the introduction of the Bad Company subtitle. This tells fans that its not a whole new battlefield but its an additional game to the series. Some people have opinions that the bad company series was produced to spot faults and suggest improvements that could be made with Frostbite 2 engine and this seems believable but does not seem like this was DICE's primary goal when producing these games. When Battlefield 3 launches it will be the true sequel to Battlefield 2 and will be marketed in that way. In my opinion it is this marketing approach that is very important to this industry to stop fans being disappointed when publishers put all the effort into producing as many cash cow titles as they can.

On a final note I shall leave you with a quote from the DICE creative director;
'You dont beat call of duty by making another call of duty. You beat it by making a better game.'

From what I have heard on various podcasts, "Battlefield 3 is the sequel to Modern Warfare that Infinity ward should have made." I have also heard that what has been shown is more "Modern Warfare than Bad Company 2 was."

Actually thats exactly what that one CEO-ish dude at DICE said in an interview about BF3.. the BC series was an experimental console offshoot just to get the engine ready and in perfect shape for BF3

It's been a while since I looked forward to a FPS game as much as I do with Battlefield 3, it feels like they really nailed it this time.
