Gundam 00 The Movie: A Wakening My Fanboy Rage

This post might be better titled "How Cross Textual Knowledge Bites me In The Fucking Ass"

I finally decided in a bout of grad school workload caused insomnia and depression to jump the shark and watch this movie.  I always knew it was bad, but man.  Mannnnnnnnn.  The story and character portrayals are bullshit.  Building the ultimate Gundam for the ultimate Innovator so it can go fly off and take a psychic history lesson about some pieces of living liquid metal?  Seriously?  I don't need to go into that.  But what makes me angrier is all the ways it so clumsily tries to ape the better moments of superior shows and present loose ends of actual merit and discard them completely.

Descartes Shaman, one of the first innovators to appear after Setsuna, proved to be a xenophobic racist, calling non-innovators the inferior species.  One would think when a wave of innovation(TM) is spreading across the human population, the movie would do well to touch further upon this racial tension right?  Nope.  Lets just kill him off.  Further, lets completely abandon any notion of that sentiment and by the end of the movie, let a population with 40% innovators live in complete peace and harmony because apparently he was the only racist in the history of the species except for all the innovades that came before him.

And then there are the referential moments.  Andrei Smirnov and four of his GNX buddies using transam to push a giant ELS capitol ship as it falls on earth, and exploding just as they succeed.  Well doesn't that sound familiar?  The movie was literally shoving a shitty tasting poopsicle in the shape of Char's Counterattack into my mouth and I was literally giving my computer screen the finger.  You're going to replace Amuro with Andrei?  Seriously?  You couldn't at least do it was a character that was memorable in anyway and give Graham the heroic death he so dearly deserved despite his antics as Mister Mushido (His first Name Is Mister)?  (For the record, SolBraves is a pretty awesome name for a MS team.)

And then of course there is the whole Jupiter Express of enemies.  The fact that something in here reminds me of the glorious Diebuster is an absolute affront to the latter.  But it doesn't take a seasoned film critic to know that this show can ONLY end with humans and aliens finding peace.  So what better way to present an alien enemy than ones completely devoid of any character at all.  In shows such Diebuster or Gunbuster where the mass of characterless aliens are titled the Space Terrible Monster Crowd, that is excusable.  In fact, that is what you should be doing.  In a show where our man protagonist is suppose to be having a dialogue with them at the climax of the movie, this does not effing work god damnit.  The fact that it made all combat between the armada of GaGa Squadrion in GN Lance costumes and the Feddies a snore fest is not lost on me either.

Though for the sake of being fair and balanced, I will say one thing.  At least the Zabanya was entertaining to watch.  Lockon actually used its bits (fins, funnels, fangs, DRAGOONs, WHATEVER) dare I say, intelligently.  Rifle bits are fucking RIFLES and shoot from far away.  They don't go charging into melee range.  Shield bits are shields and they not only defend the MS itself, but also the rifle bits from incoming shots, prolonging its combat capability.  Totally nominating the Zabanya for Saimecha 2013 because it made me enjoy this movie for just a few moments, and that is a fucking momentous achievement.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Bad movies from Anime Tv shows. Let us start the list.

Martian successors Nadesico, The prince of darkness! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbIbpxq3214

Neon Genisis Evangelion : End of Evangelion! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NqQAAFrgfc

Cowboy Bebop: Stairway to Heaven! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Au1AO1xaEts

The three Tenchi Muyo MOVIES!

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzimya! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdqqASpMV0Y

THE 17! Dragon ball/z Movies! Not one is realy at all good.

The list goes on! It isnt a case of the films are bad.......its just they dont fit well in line with the Tv series you spent 13 episodes 26 episodes 52 to even 300 episodes watching.

Americans are known for not going far enough to use the Movie format for such things. While the Japanese goes too far from the source. Changing the tone completely from the series.

I enjoyed and like all these movies and loved the Gundam 00 movie....combine then with the series you know and love...they lose big time and start feeling like an old best friendfrom when you were 5 to 10 and 10 years later you meet up and try to be friends but too much has changed and you just dont get along anymore.

Its uncomfortable.

@Akyho: Disappearance is on that list.  Your opinion is invalid.

At the least, Prince of Darkness featured far more entertaining mecha combat due to Black Selena being a boss even if every single character received a horrible haircut.  On the other hand, any negative memory with Stairway to Heaven can be wiped away with a single viewing of Knocking on Heaven's Door.

You should add Pocket Full of Rainbows to that list for turning the likeable cast of Gekko-State into a bunch of monstrosities.

Disappearance isnt bad however its basically a rehash of Tenchi Forever : The movie. Which has alternate dimension and the lead character not knowing of their true dimension and such.

Disappearance does keep more of it identity with the series, than most the films I mentioned. I actualy meant to say Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on heavens door. I always have stair way to heaven pop in. Like I say Knocking on heavens door isnt bad. It just had a certain points that feel alien to Cowboy bebop. It dosnt make it a bad film it makes different.

However every single Dragon ball Movie is horrible. More so if you get the wrong kind of dub! Man, World strongest man is terrible, add its only dub and the dub is from 93 were someone was strange in translation. "HEY ITS BIG GREEN!" Then Goku appears, in a 70s I am here to fix the sink plumber voice. "HI MY FRIENDS! I AM HERE TO SAVE YOU! I MEAN SAN-GOKU!" expected him to put one arm up and go "UP UP AND AWAAAAAY!"

While I have not watched Eureka Seven. That is something that happens too often. As soon as its a film the writers write all the characters different as-well as the story.

Why?

Why?

I'd say Knocking on Heaven's Door fits perfectly with the anime itself.  In structure, it is kind of like a grander version of Pierrot le Fou.  Vincent, like the Mad Pierrot,  both are essentially out of their minds due to circumstances outside their control.  Spike is the man sent in to wipe up their acts of evil.  Spike is the good guy.  But Spike also doesn't care.  He doesn't have any true investment in the taking down of his marks until his confrontation with them gets personal.  It is a very consistent take on the personality of carrying one hell of a weight from his past, but yet holding little value over the life of others.

As for your question of why make it different, the answer is because the other side of that canyon leads to the wide swath of anime summative OVAs.  When you tell the same story with the same characters but with a time constraint, the best you end up achieving are the TTGL movies.  While far flashier, it offers little more in terms of substance, while making what it leaves out all the more glaring.  Is there a good middle ground?  Yes, and it's name is Macross: We Remember Love.  Not every movie achieves perfection though.

I came into this thread thinking I had casually watched enough Gundam over the years to know what you'd be talking about. I left knowing better.

Gundam is definitely one of those franchises that epitomizes the phrase "Quantity has a quality unto itself."

@Akyho: Cowboy Bebop is a fucking fantastic movie and even better than the series. Watch it in Japanese too because the US dub is soulless.

Yeah I know, right? That movie was fucking BALLS TO THE SPACE. THERE ARE NO WALLS IN SPACE.

And a majority of the DBZ movies were ace. Broly, Bardock, The Tree Of Life, both Cooler movies, the one with Trunks.

This dude just goes off on some sort of childhood destroying rampage. Psh. Check yourself before your wreck yourself.

I watched the Gundam 00 movie earlier this week. Compared to the show it was a fucking disgrace.

The first season was my favorite. Geopolitics, all the likeable characters like Graham Acre, Sergei Smirnov, Saji and Louise plus the entire crew of Ptolemaios made it so memorable. I don't remember if the Trinitys were in the first season, but I'd think so because they made for decent antagonists along with Ali-Al Saachez.

The second season was still pretty great, even though I don't like how far the show distanced itself from plausible reality with the Innovators.

I honestly can't remember a single thing I liked from the movie. Perhaps the fights were okay, but I don't like that the enemy was basically sentient quicksilver. It just looked so lazy.

For my first Gundam series 00 was definitely a worthwhile trip and got me into the series pretty well. Watching SEED at the moment and I'll probably will be taking Wing on next, entirely skipping SEED Destiny.

@EvilKatarn: I strongly suggest you watch Turn A instead of Wing.  Watch Gundam utilize pixie dust properly this time.
