twylo's "beat a game in $8.55" blog

This is just a simple blog for me to keep track of the games I rent from BlockBuster and attempt to beat within the allotted time (Usually comes out to $8.55/5 days, hence the craftiness of my title).  As you can imagine, it hardly ever happens.   Most of the games I rent come on the advice of my friend, and fellow GB member fwylo. (Follow him @ http://www.giantbomb.com/profile/fwylo/blog/).

The Saboteur

I rented this game because I was on a gamerscore binge and for some reason thought it would provide me with that.  The game seems interesting enough as you're a lone Irishmen in Nazi-occupied France.  Your best friend was killed by the 3rd Reich and now you're on a mission to scalp as many Nazi fucks as possible.  The game is basically a Nazi themed GTA, just not as good.  Graphics are interesting as every new area you enter is a dark shade of black/white/grey, but as you complete missions, that area because a part of the "resistance" and the natural colors of France appear.  You can hijack cars, and there is some point to racing in the game, but the driving is really clunky and you're pretty hard pressed to not pile into walls on your way somewhere.  There is an interesting stealth aspect to the game, but it doesn't really make sense.  For example, once you're spotted, a large red circle appears on your radar that you have to make your way out of to get back into the clear.  However, you can't just go climb a building and hide for it to go away, you literally HAVE to get out of the circle.  So you could essentially get spotted creeping around by the Eiffel Tower, climb all the way to the top, and still be on red alert.  A little bit frustrating.  Speaking of climbing, the main character (Sean) is capable of climbing every damn building and structure in the game as if he was the father of Parkour.  However, at the top of every building are about TEN MILLION Nazi towers, and you shooting one bullet will have them raining down hell on you.  There is side objectives to the game where you can destroy all these Nazi strong holds, but when I got the map that showed where they all were it looked like my screen had chicken pox.  If you're looking for a different (not so good) take on a GTA game, don't be afraid to get this.  There is also downloadable content so you can see the pixel tits of the ladies in burlesque house you run your operation out of (if you're into that).  Bottom line is that it's a game that can't be fully enjoyed in a short amount of time, but it wasn't really my cup of tea to begin with, and I love the GTA series.

Bayonetta

Currently playing it right meow, and is interesting so far.  Obviously a lot of DMC and sex, although it is getting a tad hard.  I've almost completed the game and apparently I've missed a ton of weapons/chances to farm halo's.  There is one guide out, but it's in Japanese and I'd have to use Google translator to make any sense of it.  Obviously I'm not going to do that, I'm way too fucking lazy.

I've put a bit of a hold on this game as I would like to play it once the guide comes out.  I find, for myself anyways, that I tend to enjoy games a little bit more that way, especially when I'm doing it in such a short span of time.  It is a fun game, I'd just like a little help as I've almost beaten it and am missing a lot of things.  If you enjoyed DMC and enjoy fucking shit up, get this game.  Bayonetta could have chunks of blood and puss oozing from her mouth and I'd still stick my penis in there.

Darksiders

I was actually deciding between this game and Bayonetta the last time that I was at BB.  The cover art struck me initially, but I went with Bayonetta just because I had heard good things about it.  Growing up I played a lot of the Zelda series and enjoyed it, and the majority of what I heard about this game is that it is very similar to Zelda.   At the moment, I'm about 2/3 of the way through the game on the hardest setting (Apocolyptic) and have enjoyed myself.  It is most definitely similar to Zelda, but it's a very good twist of it.  There's combat, puzzles, and rewards are really good.  I find that most games you find yourself trudjing around trying to accomplish one big task, and can get bored or distracted easily.  In Darksiders, I find that the rewards are pretty constant and keep your hands on the controller and wanting to get to the next task.  Whether it be finding a secret chest, collecting skulls, upgrading your weapons, finding shards of armor, or obviously following the main story line, you really get into the game.  I think my first session was about 9 hours long.  The game is pretty wide open and each new place you visit doesn't exactly give you a mandatory path to follow.  You are allowed to explore the area you're in for a bit and find various secrets.  Boss battles are usually in your standard multiple of 3's, but they are still interesting enough.  Usually you have to use a piece of your environment to be successful.  The only real downside I have found to the game so far is that with whichever of the two weapons you are granted ( X and Y ) it's pretty much a mash fest.  When you upgrade or buy new skills, the mechanics to get the move during combat is a bit silly.  Such as LB + LS Forward + X to do a lunging attack.  It's not that aggravating, but I find you don't use your skills as much as you could.  As I said before, I'm really having a good time with it so far, and I'll update this as soon as I finish the game.
