@tevor_the_third: It's not as innocuous as it seems. It can feel to some people like an attempt at reputation laundering the height of racist imperialism as regards to industrial Britain.

I personally can't get enough of it but I see where people are coming from. Imagine if we had games about alternate reality technological Confederate States of America or some shit. Isn't always going to apeall to everyone.

@juxjuxjux: Honestly you could say Dan accidentally smoked meth and I wouldn't be shocked

"You know, I've hated Meth, and the people that do it, all my life. It just seems stupid and you lose your teeth and it's just so trashy, these days I like to keep an open mind about things so I tried some and It's now 5am and I've done two stand up sets, run a marathon and written two new Air Force Gator sequels since yesterday"

That Buffalo massacre was super historically accurate as well. Brilliant.

Roguelike = A game like Rouge. A top down turn based dungeon crawling RPG with permadeath and randomised elements e.g. Tales of Maj'Eyal or Caves of Qud.

Roguelite = A game that takes a couple of elements from Rogue, e.g. permadeath, randomisation and some RPG systems, but usually a game in a totally different genre to a turn based dungeon crawling RPG e.g. every game GBeast calls a Rougelike because reading a couple of sentences takes much more effort than constantly complaining that you don't want to learn something.

I don't think that's right. IIRC, "Roguelike" became a frequently-used term around when Binding of Isaac came out and sparked the modern popularity of procedurally-generated, run-based permadeath games, which are quite varied and not actually "like Rogue" at all in terms of gameplay, but the name stuck.

"Roguelite" became a thing when Rogue Legacy released, as I understood at the time, came to describe run-based permadeath games where the player got stronger from run to run, making future runs directly easier. The only other example I can think of is Flinthook, where you increase your max HP and number of perk slots. Games like Isaac and Gungeon are not "-lites" because the unlocks are different, but not better, starting conditions, and items that can potentially appear in future runs, not direct power increases.

I wish someone had coined a more modern, distinct genre classification for these types of games. I'm no purist, and "Roguelike" works well enough, but it feels clunky as a blanket term for a wide variety of gameplay styles that happen to have a few core tenets in common, and "Roguelite" only muddied the waters further. I personally like the description "run-based game" that Jeff uses (at least, he's the first person I ever heard use it) but I don't know how widely-understood it is.

I think some of us use the terms incorrectly to troll people that get super upset about those terms being used incorrectly because they remind us of Simpsons Comic Book guy and seem worthy of ridicule.

And language is fun and grows organically. Like/lite might as well be interchangeable since actual Roguelikes of any consequence are so few and far between we might as well steal their name. Sure, maybe it's people being lazy or trolls, but the endgame is the same and we all know what you mean when you say Roguelike. Words are like kids, they will grow up to disappoint you but you should love them anyway.

Wake me up when that 4 player 3D Mario makes it's way over. I can never get into these DK games, even with friends telling me that they are amazing and seem genuinely affected by the holy spirit while attempting to convince me of this.

This is certainly a Wings of Fury clone from 80s PC platforms. I played it on the Apple ][e. This is great, because that is one of my favorite all time games that has only been loosely spiritually succeeded by Luftrausers.

Note: Wings of Fury is a little more unforgiving in it's flight dynamics as far as stalling and momentum, plus you actually have to line up and land your plane without crashing, which was always the appropriate amount of tension.

Oh this! Broderbund right? I had it on Amiga. Such a good game. Looked amazing, gameplay was real tough for 12 year old me. Bombing zeros hiding in desert island jungles never got old. There was no auto land nonsense, you had to catch that wire!

People really want numbers to go up. It's almost as if our minds have been poisoned by addictive gambling-like psychological designs in recent games.

It is a weird game though, and the animals and skeleton murdering quests seem kind of bland compared to the treasure hunting and PvP but maybe they pick up later, though I'm not necessarily counting on it. Only a few hours logged on release so far. Even if they don't there is enough here for me, this is 100% my jam.

Nice to play a game where I don't have to think about the numbers and where my opponents wear their advantages on their sleeve, if any. Since everyone has the same gear, it's crew, skill and ship that are the only real advantages you can get. If they ever do add traits to gear I hope it's PvP only stuff. Keep the guns all vanilla.

Couldn't get a crew on a galleon due to some error, and only saw one other sloop who I helped keep afloat due to feeling sorry for him trying to solo a weeping chest (Which is super doable unless it's your first rodeo). I should have robbed him but I didn't want to go full Rust and betray his trust. Hopefully the MM is fixed when I try again tonight and we can get into some sick 4-galleon clusterfucks like in the alpha/beta.

I love this game. Will buy again on phone and switch. It's so damned good it should be in textbooks about game makery.

@xxfluffymaidenxx: Sound designer was canned for some pretty crummy tweets made (and then doubled down on, because that's what ALWAYS happens now). Here's a quick story on it:

https://kotaku.com/subnautica-dev-fired-over-hateful-statements-1822746373

Man, he is really good though. The sound design in this game is amazing. Though so is almost everything else going on. Hopefully he realises that his attitude is getting in the way of him making money and he learns to chill. Though with whats coming out of Poland at the moment I have the feeling his views are fairly widespread in that part of the world.

Whoever said the Cyclops might be the best video game vehicle ever might be onto something. I've been underwater for weeks of in game time at this stage, going out in the mech suit stationed in it's hold to mine resources and build little outposts to charge batteries, make water, build upgrades for the vehicles and scan for more resources. It feels dangerous and like actual exploration in a way I haven't felt for a long time, maybe the 90's. I guess the procedural games have exploration, but it doesn't mean as much as in this handcrafted title. Brilliant.
