Day 1 Without Video Games

Last night I decided that for the next two weeks I would not play any video games. I have both Fable 3 and Rock Band 3 pre ordered at my local gamestop and i know when those games come out I will play them to an unhealthy extent, but currently I have no games that I feel any desire to play. So until those games come out I will not play a video game.

To most people, this would seem like a very simple goal. But I think ( i hope) that the subscribers of a gaming community like GiantBomb would understand the difficulty that this holds for someone who has become reliant on the sense of freedom and exploration that video games offer. I've been a gamer all my life but for the last few years, my interest in video games have been growing to a near addictive state. 4 or 5 hours a week turned into 6 or 7 hours a day.  Because I live in an apartment that has all three current generation gaming systems as well as a Sega genesis, i feel constant pressure to indulge.

The purpose of this experiment is not to quit playing video games, it is just a break. I play video games so much i feel like I'm losing touch with reality. Sometimes I feel like I'm just watching myself and those around me, that my actions have no impact on the real world but rather a predetermined situation as in a video game.

So far I don't feel a very strong  desire to play. I anticipate this being difficult. I hope that this blog will keep me on track. I wil update this daily with feelings about video games.

This post is confusing. I think you definitely need to take a break from video games for the sake of your mental health but you say that your break is just because you don't want to play games, however you also state that it will be difficult not playing games, presumably because you want to play them I'm guessing.

It's really not that hard.  I've barely been playing games for a long while now because of school and just don't have the time I used too.  I love playing games a lot but a good break from them to explore other things might be good at times.

Uhh, if it's this hard for you to go without playing games, you need to take a look at your life.

Not doing something you enjoy should be a little difficult. Playing games is my primary form of enjoyment at this stage in my life. So if I all together stopped for more then a few days, of course I would start to miss it.

I've gone at least a month without playing a game sometimes so it seems really easy.

Cool.  Looking forward to catching your observations.

When I do this sort of thing I tend to make it games+internet, otherwise one just replaces the other.

I should do something similar, I really want to try other things but with gaming I have no real time to speak of. I over-prioritize gaming to a sick extent.

Sorry, I'm also quite self-absorbed.

Good luck with the whole thing, I am sure it'll be fine. I am sure you'll get a lot of extra time to put towards something constructive.

I have done 6 weeks so far without playing a game. I feel a lot better for it and have no desire to pick up a controller anytime soon.
