Game of The Year 2014 Users Choice

  • This was my first South Park game and apparently it is the only one I should play. I am A-Okay with that because The Stick of Truth is phenomenal. I love Paper Mario’s combat, which is basically this game’s combat, and I love South Park. You do the math. Not only did this game deliver an excellent love letter to the show, it also made a fantastic stand-alone story. The game felt like a season of South Park with throughlines and callbacks. Interestingly, since writing it, Matt and Trey have started writing the show exactly that way.

  • I know there are some purists of the series that hate this game, but I have never played the other ones. In fact, I’m pretty sure this is the first character-action game I have ever played. The way combos flowed together and from weapon to weapon has expanded what I thought combat could be. The game’s tone is over the top, but its mostly endearing. Really though, the combat is superb.

  • It took me two tries to get into this game, but once I was in, I was hooked. The skill curve and its randomizing elements make it very approachable to beginners. On the flip side, it also allows for amazing displays of skill and card combinations. Just that I am playing a CCG after going through the Yu-Gi-Oh! fad in elementary school is what really amazes me. But, hey the game is awesome. If I have 15 minutes to kill and an internet connection, odds are I’m playing Hearthstone.

  • What this game does fantastically is atmosphere. That combined with how the AI’s operate what is left of this facility gives the game a really haunting feel. Some of the puzzles weren’t really my jam, but I got back to the story with a quick YouTube search. Man, this game came out of nowhere and then just blew me away. Episode Two is next year and I can’t wait.

  • For one on one action this is now my go to. The simple controls make it something you can just hand to an average gamer with little explanation and in no time be fighting a worthy challenger. The crazed action filled with sword lunges, dive kicks, and neck-snapping on the quickly blood-soaked battlefield will be a part of any local multiplayer bash I throw for a longtime.

  • As the first game to come out after Telltale wrapped up The Walking Dead’s stellar first season (which was my 2012 GOTY), there was a high bar set for this game. The sad thing is that it does reach that bar in some spots, however in many others it can seem really dragged out. If you can forgive the poor pacing in the middle, what you are left with is an amazing world with some really cool characters. I have since read the first trade of Fables, which the game is based on, but I think this game gives that world a much more interesting, haunted feel than what I have read of its source material. The first season is solid overall, and if handled correctly, a sequel could be truly awesome.

  • Any kind of downtime this year was probably absorbed into this game. The simple mechanics in the game were clearly genius as they captivated the public for months. It’s just a shame most people played them through its clones. This game is still on my phone and I don’t see it leaving it for a long time.

  • This game is just straight up gorgeous. Its strong art in combination with the way it plays were a breath of fresh air for the mobile market. The puzzles are not hard, but that’s what I like about them. When I play this game it is just a nice, relaxing experience. My only problem with this game was that it didn’t feel long enough. With the addition of Forgotten Shores, that problem is taken care of and it delivers some of the best levels of the game.

  • This is the only browser game I think I played this year and it was the first game I have played from Holy Wow Studios. Fortunately whoever ran the filter back at my old high school had not heard of Holy Wow either. For the five weeks its episodes were rolling out I was actually looking forward to my 3D class because I knew I could be slacking off and playing this. And what a lot of fun it is! Not enough typing games come out anymore so that alone was enough to get me on board, but then it had a murder mystery, robots, aliens, spirit animals, dumb jokes. Oh yeah! Now this was a game.

  • Never have you felt cooler than when you string a faulty outlet to a lightswitch four floors down from it so you can remotely take out a guard. That mechanic of controlling electronics combined with the satisfying jumping and unlimited punches makes for a great feeling heist game.
