Playing the Too Human demo and hating the Commando class...

I really want to make it clear that I really enjoy the Too Human demo. The gameplay is really easy to get into and I have a vast appreciation for the Norse myth/technology direction and presentation that the game is going with. That is pretty amazing and fresh and I'm so glad it's happening. Yes, it may sound that I'm rushing through this to get to the negatives and I am because they are really hard to keep at the forefront of my mind. The speed and swiftness of switching from melee to your guns/rifle is very nice and it's cool to see not so much focus into guns, guns and even more guns in yet another videogame. I like swords, I can't help that.

Alright, now is when I go ahead and talk about the negatives of what I've seen so far, and I shall start with this...

  • I HATE the Commando class! Yes, making stuff blow up in games is awesome (this wouldn't be GiantBomb.com if I were wrong, I'm assuming), but this game has such a focus on the melee that it almost doesn't make sense to switch to the guns unless you just want to test it out or it really is part of the strategy to defeat a certain enemy. The guns are so much weaker than the melee that it's not as fun. In a way, it seems like the guns were tacked on... which leads me to my next point.
  • It seems like you just don't need the other classes. Yes, the game is supposed to harken back to the dungeon crawling days, but it really just doesn't seem like you need to play the game as anything other than the Champion, Berserker, and maybe Defender classes (I hate Commando, and you could go on without healing your almost unnecessary backup squad). It feels like you're given these options in your best interest for the fun of replay value, but it doesn't work too well.
  • Uhh... I don't understand why there are cybernetic push-button-to-solve puzzles when they could have been done a lot slicker. They don't seem very... needed, i guess? It's weird that I have to do some sluggish running and fake telekinesis to open a door.

Right now, I just want to lay it out that these are my opinions and mine alone. If you want to agree with me, please do and the same if you disagree with me. Too Human seems like a game that will be talked about a lot once it comes out so I might as well start early.

I quite disagree with you, but don't get me wrong. I think there are many way one can play this game, so some of wht you don't like may be the best feature for another one.

i've been playing the demo for the last couple of days and I can say that:

1. The commando class is THE best class when you fight with guns. They deal LOTS of damage with guns, more than any other class. In fact, when I play the commando I quite suck at melee combat. Ok, in the demo you don't have plenty of points to put into skills and much varied equipment, so you might find a 2-handed hammer which makes your commando deal more damage than with a rifle or guns, BUT the commando has skills and equipment oriented to enhancing the performance of gunplay. It also has explosions-enhancing bonuses, so you'd best go along with a rifle. I always bust through enemies with a breeze when using a slug rifle with a commando. Maybe that class just doesn't go along with your playstile, but it's NOT that bad as you say. And surely it's NOT that melee oriented. It's quite the contrary.

2. I think that, strictly speaking, no one needs classes to play this game, BUT classes add A LOT to differentiation. Each one is played differently from the others; class-specific equipment has different bonuses; the skill tree adds some variety in the strategy of playing each class. You could go all by yourself as a berserker or change the way you play the game, select the bio engineer and concentrate on keeping your squad alive. The fact that there are different classes can also be seen as a suggestion to try different approaches and strategies to play the game. And I find this very interesting, because we are all able to get a tough guy, give him the baddest weapon we can find and crash everything in our way; but playing as a bioengineer is not THAT simple, not because that class is crap, but because it requires a different approach to the battles.

3. Yeah, the puzzles are not that interesting. They quite often break the pace of gameplay. I hope there will be more interesting puzzles in the final game and not just time-consuming, useless ones.

For the rest, I totally agree with you. Tha geme seems pretty good and I'm looking forward to try the final product. Damn, it's due out at the end of August in Europe! I'll wait for you opinion then, since you'll get it before me =))

Y'know what, I usually don't do this but I'll be truthful here: you're absolutely right. Your second point is especially spot-on, and this game could have gone without any kind of class selection and just go with a skill tree orientation and names your class as you move along, but it wouldn't be the game Silicon Knights is making it to be.

I think what my problem with it is that, as gamers, we may tend to be used to going after that big dude with the awesome armor instead of thinking about helping out because we like to feel like badasses, not doctors (although doctors are pretty badass in their own right). That being said, it is a great feeling to keep that Valkyrie from getting to your teammates and finishing the demo with a full squad.

Really, my biggest problem which I'm not even sure I mentioned was that there's not much weight to what you're doing. Maybe if there was some kind of really hard rumble at certain moments are more pointed out... I dunno how to describe it. Maybe if certain moments were on an epic scale, but there are still mini-epics going on the whole time. The controls made me feel like I was sort of floating through the game, which is cool but a little on the easy side. This is strange... I've gone to complement you yet I ended up writing more about the game. I will definitely give the game some more time though... right after I'm done drooling over Soul Calibur IV.

Whether I get it right when it comes out or not, I'll definitely let you know how it ends up. Besides, this is just a demo and whatever I have a problem with could be changed in the final product. Who knows?

Dyack knows... that's who...

In addition to your thoughts, keep in mind the demo is the beginning of the full game, minus some story-telling movies.

So maybe the sense of epic you lack will build up as you play through the game.

I was quite disappointed from all the previews and comments I read about the game, but then I played the demo. I think the key to full appreciation is learning how the game is best played out.

We'll see when the game is out =)
