Games that Somehow Released in 2011

This is a list of games that probably shouldn't have existed for one reason or another, but they totally do and they came out in 2011

List items

  • This obviously had to be at the top of the list. Duke Nukem Forever came out and it was kind of okay! I really like this game, but I realize it's not for everyone...in fact it's pretty much only for people who used to love Duke. It had some content cut out of it even to make this release, which is fortunately coming out as DLC. That's kind of nuts isn't it? That DLC is out December 2011, tomorrow as I write this, and I'll probably get around to playing it eventually. The fact that this game came out means that basically any game can come out, even when you least expect it.

  • It's the other FEAR 2! At one point, two FEAR 2's were in development thanks to the weird rights surrounding this IP. Monolith was developing one sequel that they couldn't call FEAR 2, and so instead they were going to name it Project Origin, and Universal had another one in development somewhere with the FEAR 2 name and some characters that Monolith didn't have full rights to. Eventually the IP went back to Monolith and Project Origin became the real FEAR 2. I thought that the other game, quite far in development, would fall into the ether, but apparently WB kept it going this whole time and put it out as FEAR 3. Which is a REALLY WEIRD thing to do. The story doesn't really gel at all with the events of FEAR 2, which makes sense, and it's a different engine made by the guys at Day 1 so it doesn't have that same Monolith feel. Still, I'm delighted that I got to play the other FEAR 2.

  • I'm talking about the console versions here. Crytek said it could never be done! And then they did it using the engine from Crysis 2 and improved the lighting in the process. This is a surprisingly complete version of Crysis, enhanced in many ways, and weirdly screwed up in others thanks to the streamlined controls of Crysis 2.

  • Somehow some of the Grindividuals got to make ANOTHER Bionic Commando even after the 2008 game didn't do so well. This is a sequel to the first Rearmed, and ties together the plot of that game and 2008 in some really clever ways. Some of this stuff was apparently cut from BC 2008. Shame that, unlike Rearmed and BC 2008, this game isn't very good. It tries to incorporate some of the mechanics from BC 2008, but it's just not very fun or good. Did I mention it wasn't very good? Might be the most disappointing game of the year for me, if only because it's so forgettable and hey also not very good.

  • Obsidian made a new Dungeon Siege game 6 years after the last one. It runs on their own engine and is the first Obsidian game that's really polished and not horribly broken. It's also kind of bland. Now they're making a South Park game. Weirdness all around.

  • It's not surprising that THQ put out a yearly wrestling title, but it is surprising that they claimed to be using a new engine and then lo and behold, are actually using a new engine. After so many years of this game being the same, it's super bizarre and cool.

  • Whoa man, TOR is actually a real thing! The most expensive MMO/game ever! Bioware actually released two games in a single year! Three if you count the Mass Effect 2 PS3 conversion!

  • APB died and then came back as a Free to Play game. How often does a game come out at retail, die horribly, then come back again? This game is the zombie of videogames. The character creator and graphics are amazing. The actual game parts are sort of okay. But hey, now it's free instead of 50 dollars plus a sub.

  • This is the closest we'll ever get to a BTTF 4, and it features a good chunk of the original cast. It's not perfect, but it'll do, and it has all the charm that every Telltale release exudes.

  • This game had its original release date buried, and then it was quietly shoved out the door non-episodically, a first for a "Big" Telltale release. By all accounts, it's Telltale's worst product. I haven't played it yet, but the adventure and Telltale fan in me tells me I must at some point. It figures that the one time Telltale tries to push out of their comfort zone it comes off as half-baked. Also whoa man Universal let Telltale make two games based on their iconic movie properties which are canonical for no readily apparent reason!

  • A new Sonic game that is really good and makes fun of the series for how weird and mediocre it has become, thanks to a silly time travel gimmick. Sega has said they aren't going to make any more games like this, so don't worry, Sonic will go back to being lame.

  • I'm actually talking about the Fall of Setarrif standalone expansion here. This new, large chapter for the game was finished and days away from releasing when the company making it went under. A different group bought the Gothic IP, but Fall of Setarrif was nowhere to be seen...until it randomly released a year later. I'm glad that I got to play this because Gothic 4 is still great.

  • Nintendo remembered that Starfox was a thing. Then, they gave some of the creators of the original Star Fox the budget to produce this weirdly lavish remake of Star Fox 64. Featuring brand new graphics and completely re-done voice acting from the original cast, Nintendo put way more effort into this than they probably had to.

  • Wait a minute. Reflections still exists? They made a new Driver game? It's actually really good? Weird.

  • Techland's zombie opus that took them like 6 years to make. It'll probably be more famous for its cinematic trailer than for being a pretty good zombie RPG.

  • Let's make a sequel to American McGee's Alice 10 years after the original and also develop some of the most amazing hair technology for it. Wait, why are we doing this again?

  • Hey look it's a sequel to Rez. This honestly was a long time coming, given how popular Rez always was with the hardcore crowd. It's unfortunate that this game didn't have much more content than Rez, and didn't manage to come out simultaneously on both platforms. This could have been a hit as a downloadable game. It's actually now available as a download as of this writing, so you've got another chance to buy it...if you like rail shooters. Uh. Maybe that's just me?
