The Original Generation games (which used only characters original to the series) were previously the only ones that made it to North America. It was mostly due to the licensing nightmare, as different companies held rights to the different anime series and didn't play nice with each other. You could get official English versions of some games by using a VPN and hitting certain Asian marketplaces though.
In fact Ryusei, Aya, Raidese, and the SRX mech (among others) are all original characters made just for the Super Robot Wars franchise. Though you can technically see them in anime, as the Original Generation games were made into anime after they were released. Though they are extremely difficult to find. I think the only existing copies of the anime version of the first game are poor quality bootlegs. You can Google specific terms to find a weird backdoor into part of Crunchyroll off the main site to watch it.
I love how in the Atomic Heart trailer, everyone has a look of bewilderment, confusion, or shock. Except Jan, who is just smiling and jamming to the music.
Oh man, Jason talking about his son seeing the new Ratchet and Clank on the cross-media bar but having to tell him he can't play it cause it's not out made me realize I had never thought of that aspect of the lives of people in game journalism. Like, sure, as a kid you might get access to a lot of games day 1, but that sensation of the game being in your house but you can't touch it would drive a young me crazy... It'd be like when I saw the N64 hidden in my parents bedroom when I was a kid a month before Christmas. Just a lot more of the time.
I'm not a big fighting game guy, and have never been into GG, but I really have to say: This game looks absolutely stunning. That seems to be true for most GG games, but still. It takes talent to make such a 'simple' art style look as good as this does. The music seems pretty good too.
