"What is the best platformer game ever made?

You may not believe this, but my favorite platformer game ever is, unironically, without a shadow of doubt…

BUBSY 3D (PS1)

Now THIS is what I call a hidden gem. Despite how infamous it has become in gaming, Bubsy 3D is actually AN INCREDIBLY GOOD GAME. Bubsy 3D features nice controls, great graphics, fantastic gameplay, an amazing soundtrack, and perhaps the greatest amount of charm I’ve ever seen in a game.

If you don’t believe me, I used to make fun of this game, but then I actually played it. It was AMAZING. Since then, I’ve beaten Bubsy 3D around 19 TIMES, made some self-made challenges, and replayed the game’s levels FOR HOURS AND HOURS, and I don’t regret A SINGLE SECOND of my time playing Bubsy 3D.

I could make a 1,000,000-page essay on how great Bubsy 3D is and how overlooked and underrated it is, but I’m gonna summarize it in one sentence: Go and play Bubsy 3D, IT’S REALLY GOOD.

PS: If you have problems with the controls just practice a little more, and remember you can move in ANY direction while jumping.

Bubsy 3D is better than Mario 64 and nobody can change my mind."

I wish Jess had spent more time talking about what Scorn is, as opposed to defending a work against internet discourse. I don’t care what other people think, I want to hear your thoughts and opinions.

Amen! I listen to the Bombcast to hear what GB thinks about games, not what twitter thinks. Have more respect for your own thoughts and experiences and don't elevate annoying rando opinions!

Jess is wonderful but she's internet-poisoned. I assume this has to do with her history with Something Awful elevating the salience of online discourse in her mind. As someone who interacts with Twitter and internet forums more or less zero amount (I post on GB about 5 times per year, that's about it), all I care about is what the smart, thoughtful, vetted professionals on this site think. It's always strange to hear discussion of a game that presupposes knowledge of (or concern for) the thoughts of some nameless internet gamer hivemind. One of the reasons I come here is to avoid all of that white noise.

@erelven: I'm playing on Xbox Series S with a wireless controller, so I'm sure there's some input lag going on, but trust me, the problem is not the game, it's me and my stupid brain.

As someone with no rhythm whatsoever, I found this game basically impossible to play. I don't think there's anything I could do to get better at it, either. It's too bad because I like the music (metal is a genre I enjoy in tiny portions), the look, and the overall structure. One of the few games I've encountered where I'm gated out because of the way my brain works or doesn't work. It's humbling and makes me empathize even more with people who have things like color blindness and other conditions that make certain games impossible to play.

I like Lucie Steiner from her work on the Majority Report, which I listen to every day.

I like Emily Panic from some stuff she's done with Run the Jewels.

I love "How Did This Get Made."

I don't think this show is very funny so far. I understand shows need room to grow and improve and hopefully they get there. Early on in the GB days, I thought Alex was trying too hard also, and over time he mellowed out and became very funny and just overall awesome.

There's a manic energy to these first two episodes that has a bit of a try-hard feel to it. They're kind of trying to score one-liners over each other, rather than allowing a natural chemistry to build and for the comedy to evolve from that. There has to be a bit of a passing game in comedy; it can't all just be ball hogs. I hope over time they give themselves and each other more space to grow and get comfortable. I think the show will be better for it.

My appetite for dumb guy stuff went away when dumb guys took over the governments of numerous major countries a few years ago. If this is a show in which Dan approaches things with curiosity then I might watch it. If it's just reveling in his dumb guy persona that he created and that people seem to love/hate then I'm not interested.

On paper this is very much for me, since I listen to lots of podcasts about albums and the ones where they rip into bad ones are often my favorite. In practice, the humor in this first episode was kind of cringe and the burns didn't particularly hit, other than maybe the running pedophilia joke but even that I think could have been tighter. I also think 5 people is maybe too many for a relatively quick and simple show. A lot of the bits end up getting interrupted or just lost in the chaos. Anyway, I'll give it a couple more episodes to see if it gets better.
