@kid_gloves: I mean, they succeeded doing that with Yakuza 4. Even though it happens well into the timeline, it felt much more like a soft reboot for the series than any other game in the series, making it an easy mid-series jumping on point. (0 is the better starting point now, obviously.)

Yakuza 6 definitely does not seem to be that though. The game basically opens with the ending of 5 and spends little time setting up characters you're expected to know.

@paulunga: I think Dragonball is better than anything that came after (still don't think it's great though), but I would never recommend it to someone like Jeff and Dan. There's no way it's what they're looking for.

The worst kind of anime fan is the kind that can't recognize other people's tastes when recommending anime. I really really like Steins;Gate, but I'd have to be a moron to think they would enjoy it more than something like DBZ.

no idea who thought it was a good idea to have jeff on this

he doesn't like anime, he doesn't like dragon ball z

weak vid here

He does like fighting games though, and guess what? It's at least as much a fighting game as it is a DBZ game. Maybe even moreso!

Having the perspective of someone who likes fighting games but isn't a DBZ fanboy is a good thing. I'm not even sure why you're so down on Jeff when he actually seems to kinda like it. Certainly more than any anime fighter I've seen him try.

Can someone tell me how easy it is to play this game as someone who doesn't play fighting games? Is it like Street Fighter 4 in that you have kind of slow, deliberate moves or is it more fluid like Tekken or the Budokai games?

It's an anime fighter, an Arcsys fighter in particular. Slow and deliberate is never part of the occasion. They're a very different beast from Tekken too though.

@genessee: Yes.

@humanity: I don't think that's really true. One of the things that appealed to me about Monster Hunter from the very beginning is that "organic-ness" he was talking about, but not simply in terms of atmosphere, but in terms of the gameplay experience in general.

Monster Hunter actually provides quite a bit of feedback on your progress, however a lot of it is more subdued and organic and forces the player to learn and pay attention to on-screen queues. You get the obvious stuff like them running away or limping as queues for how much health they have left, but also stuff like toppling or drooling or stumbling, or parts breaking or all indicators of your progress and how effectively your fighting. Not to mention there are unique sound effects and visual flashes for when you hit a weak point or when you're attacking at an optimal distance or not.

The first time you fight a monster you won't quite how tough they are, so it might feel like a long fight that you are unsure of when it will end. But you take that knowledge you learned with you into the next fight and know this time when it's limping it has roughly so much health left and I can see how much damage I'm doing so I know it will take roughly so long to kill him relative to how effectively I'm dealing damage. That element of info gathering and knowledge building is what elevates Monster Hunter above a simple boss rush and gives it a unique feel few games match.

I've played other monster hunting games like Toukiden that do give bosses life bars and I definitely found the bosses less interesting because of it.

@whatshisface: It's just an old joke anyway. He does sound a lot like Troy Baker, and has literally taken over former Troy Baker roles on multiple occasions, but he's still pretty identifiable when he's doing his own thing, and has enough stand out roles of his own to be ranked among the best. (I don't think even Troy Baker could have done a better Yusuke in P5.)
